I grew up in the midwest. My family had a 27' Pace Arrow motorhome during my childhood. I remember visiting and staying in some beautiful campgrounds around the WI, MI, MN area. Those campground's allowed some sort of privacy with some reasonable spacing between sites. You would always be aware of your neighboring campers, but it was basically pretty private most of the time. Many of these memories were of state parks. Those same memories are what I loved about RV'ing and made me a permanent fan.
Now, all grown up, I live in AZ and after buying our first RV I am starting to look for places to camp around the southwest. Unlike what I grew up with in the midwest, I am really disappointed to find that 95% of the campgrounds in the southwest have sites that barely have enough room to open awnings without hitting the next RV over. And best case, you may have a few feet. This is what I call "Cubicle Camping" and it is everywhere here.
We struggle to understand this.
I already live in a typical cubicle AZ neighborhood. Despite how nice or how large a home is here in AZ (PHX area), your wall is likely 20 to 25 feet from your neighbor's wall. I can't stand it after always living with large yards and privacy.
Anyway, the reason we got the trailer was to get away from the cubicle life. We are disappointed to find that, without boondocking, there is little chance of that here in the southwest. We do like the idea of boondocking and have done it the only times we have had the trailer out, but very disappointed in the campground options for a reasonably private site in the southwest.
