Waxing

I have a 2009 Cougar 27RL. Should I wax the trailer? If so, what type of was should I use ? I am worried about the decals being damaged in some way.

Yes wax it like an auto and avoid waxing the decals. there are products that are safe to use on decals but not wax.

I've used Meguairs NXT on my camper for the last 3 years, decals and all it still looks great. Sets outside in Ohio all year long. It is a synthetic so it lasts alot longer than regular wax.

I use some stuff called P-38-Q RV, Boat & Aircraft Wax

http://www.prowax.com/waxes/P-38-Q_R...craft_Wax.html

Works great. I have an old 1989 camper van and it brings the old finish back.

When doing a quick job I use Protect-All found at Walmart. It's a super easy on and off wax

I've also used both products on all my decals with no ill effects so far.

I use 3M Marine products on all my Toys ( RV,Boat's, Harley,Snowmobile, and when I had it my Airplane). It does not hurt Decals and can be used to polish plexiglass.

My DW thought the protection package was a good idea when we bought the 5er. I was a bit skeptical, but who am I to argue -right? I'm not sure what kind of snake oil they used, but they said it would not be necessary to wax the rig for 5 years and then it could be reapplied. Now, if you're telling me I don't need to wax it, you're telling me what I want to hear and I'm gonna take you at your word. It's a year old now and it sat out, uncovered, through a Pacific Northwest winter and it's still shining like new.

I've owned several boats from 32' to 42' and used Star Brite Marine Polish With Teflon on all of them with good results. I would recommend it for a fiberglass-sided trailer. You can get it at West Marine.

Happy trails,

Hello Scuba0331 - Yes, I use it on everything. No argument with those that prefer waxing, but, for me at least, I don't know how to wax the sides without getting wax on the graphics (guess I have trouble coloring inside the lines).
The first time I treated the roof, I used the Dicor product then used 303 on all the plastic up there. Now I just use 303. Trailer shines like a new penny

What 303 product is everyone using? When looking at their website I see they have my versions of it!

For people using it on everying do you just wash and dry your trailer and then wipe the 303 product on and that is it?

Thanks

I believe that most of us who use 303 are using the Aerospace Protectant in the spray bottle but it is also available in larger quantities in quart or gallon sized plastic containers.

I've been reading several posts regarding the use of wax or polish on decals and there seems to be some concern about this. Cautions have been given advising people not to use wax but I've never actually read anything that says what the dangers are.

After spending some time trying to find out something a bit more authoritative, I did find out the following:

1) the quality of decals varies greatly as does their physical makeup depending upon their use. Some decals are not meant to withstand the elements and are for short-term or interior use only.

2) If the decals are smooth and glossy it seems like it would be ok to apply wax but not to those decals that are rough or have a matte finish.

3) Since most waxes and polish contain some abrasives and petroleum distillates, they may be harmful to some decals. Wax can also dry up the plasticizing compound found in the decal causing it to fade or turn whitish.

4) It was suggested that you apply Aerospace 303 over the decal, let it dry and then apply wax or polish over the RV - including the decals. The 303 will repel the wax and protect the decal.

5) The use of RainX (the stuff you put on windshields) was also suggested as a means of repelling the wax. Use as you would for 303.

From my experience, I've applied wax (usually the "Orange Stuff") for years over decals without any problems. The decals are not, however, subjected to long term UV rays so they don't take a beating from them quite so much.

I think if you were to find a wax that did not have any petroleum distillates or was non-abrasive, you might be ok to apply wax over your decals. But using 303 seems to be an effective method of keeping them looking clean and fresh.

Will this 303 work on a lightly oxidized rig? I am looking at trading my 5er in next spring and just want in to shine so it looks good on trade. I was looking at having it detailed but I am looking at several hundred $ and don't want to put that kind of money into it. Decals are already cracked and pealing.
