Hot Water Heater issues

We're currently camping at my wife's cousins farm. They have a barn with sufficient power. I plugged in & turned on the AC. The breakers immediately popped. He also has a generator with a 30 amp plug. I plugged into that & popped the breaker. After trouble shooting, I discovered that the hot water heater is the problem. When it's set to electric it pulls to many amps. But the LP won't light.

Two questions.

1. Does the hot water heater normally draw a lot of amps?
2. Why won't the LP light? Is there something else that I have to do other than flip the switch?

Thank you.

Daryl

First turn off electronic heating element on water heater (dip switch on exterior side of h20 heater. Then flip on wall switch for lp hot water heater. Make sure propane is on and tanks have propane. Fire up burner on kitchen stove ton confirm propane is supplied and lines bled. Water Heater should fire up within 30 seconds of turning on lp switch
Let us know what happens.

Just thinking, are you absolutely certain the plug you hooked to in the barn was 120 volt? You need to get a meter and check it ASAP. You may have bigger problems if it was 240 volts.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I'm positive that I was plugged into 120 volt outlets. I'm tripping the 30 amp on the generator as well.

Thank you for the suggestion. We now have hot water using the LP.

You normally cant run your AC and your electric water heater at the same time.......you will draw too many amps and kick the breaker almost everytime.
You can either kick off the AC and run just the fan.....then the electric water heating element will work fine. Or just use the Propane water heater when using the AC. I figured this out the hard way as well.........

That answers my question. I was thinking of stopping by my local dealer to see if I might have a short in the hot water electrical.

Its way to hot to run on the FAN only, AC was a must. But once I got the LP hot water figured out, thank you therink,I was able to run on the generator just fine.

Thank you all for the help. Its always a learning experience.

FYI. You will have the same problem if you run your AC and microwave at the same time.
