looking for new truck

OK.... I went out looking at new trucks today, the two I liked are both single rear wheel.

The F250 I liked....
Drivetrain: Four Wheel DriveCurb Weight - Rear (lbs): 2846Gross Vehicle Weight Rating Cap (lbs): 10000Gross Combined Wt Rating (lbs): 19000Dead Weight Hitch - Max Trailer Wt. (lbs): 5000Dead Weight Hitch - Max Tongue Wt. (lbs): 500Wt Distributing Hitch - Max Trailer Wt. (lbs): 12000Fifth Wheel Hitch - Max Trailer Wt. (lbs): 11900Fifth Wheel Hitch - Max Tongue Wt. (lbs): 2975SAE Net Horsepower @ RPM: 385 @ 5500

The F350 I like...
Drivetrain: Four Wheel DriveCurb Weight - Rear (lbs): 2924Gross Vehicle Weight Rating Cap (lbs): 10800Gross Combined Wt Rating (lbs): 19000Dead Weight Hitch - Max Trailer Wt. (lbs): 5000Dead Weight Hitch - Max Tongue Wt. (lbs): 500Wt Distributing Hitch - Max Trailer Wt. (lbs): 12000Fifth Wheel Hitch - Max Trailer Wt. (lbs): 11900Fifth Wheel Hitch - Max Tongue Wt. Now what does this all mean? They are both close to being the same....

Numbers

Wow, lot's of numbers here... F250/350 have so many options that raise or lower their capacities... What is it that you wish to baseline tow?

I’m guessing he wants to tow his new Cougar that’s in his sig. That max trailer weight (non fifth-wheel) is disturbing, though. Only 5000 lbs?

We are looking to move up into a 5th wheel sometime in the next year or so and need to get a bigger truck first. Not really sure what we want yet but don’t want a Keystone dealer to say sorry you don’t have enough truck for that trailer or even have them sell us something that is too big for what we have. After looking at a few new trucks today and listening to the dealers there I am even more lost than before. Haven the F250 and F350 being so close to towing the same capacity and haven almost a 10 grand price difference. I guess we are going to look for something about the same size as what we have now but only in a 5th wheel.

My trailer the 31RKS shipping weight is 6990 lbs. carrying capacity is 2010 and has a hitch weight of 940. Not to sure where you got the 5000 lbs from...

The specs he posted were a bit run together, but it looks like it says:
Max Trailer Wt. (lbs): 5000

Again, the specs were run together, so I could have been reading it wrong.

Here's my take on it. If you're looking at a new TV and a 5er later, I would get about the biggest TV I could, like the F350 in a Dually. Then when you go looking at 5ers and the DW falls in love with that 39 foot 5 slide 15000 Lbs monster you would already have the TV to haul it. Not knowing you situation, a dually might be out of the question, parking restrictions etc., won't fit a lot of garages. Just something to think about as it's nice to go looking at 5ers and know you don't have to restrict yourself to something smaller than you would really like. Good luck in your search.

I have an 08 F350 SRW and the towing capacity is 5000lbs with a weight bearing hitch. It goes to over 11000 with a weight distributing hitch. As for the $10000 difference between an F250 and F350, I think you must be overlooking something. I am in Canada and here the difference between similarly equipped F250s and F350s is only about $1000. Did the F350 perhaps have a diesel engine vs a gas engine in the F250? This is the only way I could see that big a difference. Or perhaps a base model vs a King Ranch or platimum.

2011 F250 Super Duty 6.7L Diesel for me. . .

Bought my 2011 F250 6.7L diesel short bed, SRW w/20" wheels in June 2010 followed by 2011 Keystone Raptor 36' toyhauler two months later. This combo has worked well for us with over 5,000 miles of towing to date. I've weighed everything and am close to limits but absolutely no problems or concerns to date. No need for a dually for us and I really enjoy towing the trailer.

My brother in law has the same year truck/engine in the F350 also SRW but in the long bed. He pulls a 2010 Keystone Fuzion Touring II toyhauler also 36'. Only difference between the two trucks is his springs are a bit heavier. Because of my lighter springs I installed Firestone Ride Rite Airbags to bring my bed up a couple inches for a level ride. I inflate the airbags to 45 to 50 lbs max.

The new Ford diesel engine at 400 hp and 800 lbs of torgue does a great job pulling the 5'er over steep grades with little to no slowing down. On level highways I reach 11 mpg - not bad at all. On level highway driving without the 5'er I can consistently get 20 to 21 mpg at 65 mph.

Bottom line we are very pleased with our truck and trailer. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck.

Wink Size Matters

Lots of positive advice on tow vehicle choices have been posted. Comming from a construction / trucking background I can remember my Dad saying, "ALWAYS BUY A TRUCK ONE SIZE BIGGER THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING TO NEED." I suspect that when all is said and done you will probably end up with a 1-ton 3500 series or F-350 tow vehicle. As far as the SRW vs. the DRW goes I have pulled 5-Vers with both and found the DRW to be more stable in windy conditions. Enjoy truck shopping and hope you get many years of pleasure out of both truck and the next camper.

Truck

There is no doubt about it, equally equipped F250/F350 (or other brand) vehicles come with higher price tags for the F350 vs the F250. I certainly would not advocate for your requirements just because I have the dually, however as other posters have said, the dually feels very stable in extreme conditions. As for us, we bought at the upper limit of what we could afford, leaving off what I considered extra's. The only options that I feel we made a mistake in not ordering was the rapid heat option and getting the Reese from Ford vs adding from our RV dealer. Ordering from Ford would have given a larger hitch for cheaper! Even in our medium climate here, it takes the beast about 10-15miles to warm up!

go with the 350, i wish i would have. it will be worth the "investment" in the end. in a few years when you trade it in, and i know a lot of us say it, "this is the last one for a while", it will be worth a little more then the 250. so in the end you pay a little more, but you get a little more. i would't worry about a dually, unless you want one. with a 350 your towing and hauling options are all there. if you have the extra cash, go for it.

I had a F250 gas and upgraded to the F350 diesel and love it. The price of fuel is high but worth every penny when towing. Good luck in your search and test drive a few!!

Happy Camping

One thing to keep in mind depending on your state with the F350 is the Registration. In some states Registration will be more and will have to be done every year.

I have a SRW F350 and simply love the truck. It pulls my trailer very easily. I got the F350 because, as others have said, I do not want to HAVE to buy another truck when we upgrade to a fiver is a couple of years when the kids are all on their own.
