Where would you go?

Let's play a game. Where would you go to escape 100+F heat? I'm near Houston Texas so let's say the destination should be within a 4 day drive of here. Considerations should be costs, elbow room in the CG, average daily temps, and ease of access. We've done Colorado at Vallecito Resort. Weather was good.
What say you?

Just looked at a US weather map and upper 60s in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Probably better to fly as that might be a trip that is so tiring you wouldn't enjoy the cooler temps when you got there. Never been in the area but upper 60s sound sweet. 105F right now in the Garden of Eden (Mico).

10-4 George. It's 100F here with Galveston Bay and Gulf of Mexico humidity. I'm thinking upper Wiscanson. Maybe do a slow roll up the Mississippi River at COE CGs. I like the upper midwest..Iowa, etc.

Elevation is your best option. I'd go to the mountains of New Mexico or Colorado. Reasonably close with excellent access. Plus, lots to see when you get there.
I particularly like the mountains around Telluride, CO.
You can really get away from it all if you want too dry camp or have full hook ups in Ouray.

We used to live in Houston, so you have our sympathy. Don't know if it is a 4 day drive, as it can take almost a day just to get from Houston to any other state. But we would be heading to Cody Wyoming. Been there and love it. So much to see.
And yes it is hot in Columbia SC, but not as bad as Houston.

Wife and I are having this very same discussion. We have reservations at the OBX beach but with the heat indices around 100 degrees we're thinking of changing directions and going to the western VA mountains.

Brent is that 4 4hr days or 4 12 hr. days?

From where you are I would hit CO or northern NM. I've been going to both all my life (a fairly long time) and I never tire of them - nor have I seen everything to see in either of them. I tire of some particular places but not the states. We're low maintenance campers so if I've got a place to cook/sleep and scenery to see/photograph, or fishing, or history to explore, a good place to eat (or cook out) I can spend a month and not blink.

Here's a link to a place you could go to get cool. Used to go there quite often. Not much to do though other than hike. You can go fishing in some of the streams around but a fair drive to get to them. They call it Cordova Pass; we always called it Apishapa.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordova_Pass_(Colorado)

On one trip we too my parents. Walking around my mom was taking in the scenery and commenting about the squawking birds. About that time one took off out of a tree, flew over us, and crapped right on top of her head. Should have heard the yelling. Another time we were breaking camp and I was shutting down the fire pit. Don't know what possessed me but I just reached down and grabbed a rock to throw on the rock pile that covered the dead pit. It had been sitting as part of the fire ring all morning with a fire. I grabbed that thing with all the fingers and immediately I immediately sizzled, yelled and threw the rock at the same time (if that's possible ). Had some stuff you can't get anymore from a safety kit and sprayed my hand. By the time we broke camp and left my hand, which was burned pretty good, had stopped burning and pounding. We thought it was a miracle. The skin started coming off the next day but that was about it. Lots of places with cool weather around in those parts.

Yes, the Cuchera Loop. I looked at a couple RV parks in LaVeta years ago. I'll look again. Good idea. Thanks.

Let me rub this in a little. We’re in northern Wisconsin for the summer. 73 degrees today so we put about 75 miles on the trails in the side by side. We’re headed to Newfoundland in a week or two, through Ontario and Quebec and then spend some time in Labrador before crossing into God’s country! Newfies are the absolute salt of the earth.

If you don't mind a 20 hr. drive from Houston I'd recommend Sister Bay, Wisconsin. It's a little more than 1300 miles. Sister Bay is on the Door County peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan. Summertime temps up there are comfortable and there's plenty to do.

Besides hiking and fishing there are lots of places to eat, shop, drink, scuba dive, bike, drink, shipwreck museums and lighthouses to visit. They have full hookup campgrounds as well as a couple of State Parks.

The one big drawback is having to pass through or near Chicago . The traffic, construction, and crime are reason enough to plan a route that bypasses the Windy City.

If you have never been to Wisconsin it might be worth checking out, it's a pretty state with lots to do in whatever part you decide on. Upper Michigan is another good place to go to as well.

That's a very beautiful area. We've gone over that bridge several times on our way to the Greenbriar. No camping there, but we have stayed in the "cottages" there and they are quaint.
