Thought this was pretty cool

I forgot I had these pictures. About a month ago a guy pulls into the site next to us in Waynesboro,Va and has this setup. The next day I am talking to him about it. He says it works great and that when he is on the road there is a release so that the tires on the unit turn when he does and he locks them in the straight ahead position when in parking in a site. It has two it looked like 4" square rails that slid into receivers on both sides of the back of his TV. He had a topper on his truck so had all the storage capacity of a truck pulling a bumper mount. His 5ver was only 36' and if I remember correctly he said he was 64' total length. His truck was an F350 SRW.

I’ve seen two people who have them. Both said they’re very stable. I think they’re pretty cool, but I doubt I’ll ever own one.

It looks sort of neat but..... Looks to me like that is going to add about 8'+ to whatever length of 5th wheel you have. That is going to make it really tough to get into a lot of places. I guess bottom line is I see easier hitching and gaining bed space but the complication of accessing sites, storage of an extra trailer both when in use and not in use, to level trailer you have to disconnect from truck then disconnect from the trailer etc. It might work for someone but I won't be getting one.

Me either the tail swing on my current 5ver is bad enough with out adding more length to it. I just thought it was cool.

I don’t believe it’s considered double.

The people that I ran across used it because they leased their truck and didn’t want to add a hitch. Probably wouldn’t be an issue if the leased truck had a puck system

This guy did it did it strictly to be able to use his bed for storage as his 5ver didn't have much storage.

I suppose it's a clever way to "solve" over-payload problems... but then they just move to your brakes and your horsepower.

If I remember correctly, it has a braking system. I saw tests somewhere that it actually shortened braking distances It’s not for everyone, but does serve a purpose and solve problems for some people.

I've seen a couple of these. The first at Ft Davis, TX about 5 years ago and the next a couple years after. I don't think they're selling many. I know I wouldn't want one.
I always remember the KISS principle, "keep it simple stupid" and that thing looks like a lot of extra complexity...not for me.
I wonder about sway with the pivot point so far back?

And that is a good point! That hitch sitting in the middle of those two small tires vs bolted to the bed of a 8k truck might give a little pause.

I can't speak for other states, but in Michigan, if it has wheels that touch the pavement and is a separate entity, it has to have a license plate and registration That makes it a trailer and using it with a fifth wheel would be "towing doubles"... Current Michigan law requires the primary (first) trailer to be a gooseneck or fifth wheel, which makes this device not eligible for towing doubles in Michigan.

I've seen a couple of these on the road and in rest areas as we travel. I've not yet taken a close look at it since it isn't something I could use and have no plans to buy. That said, it may solve some problems for some situations, but towing cross country may present a situation where the operator might get "sidelined in an out of the way place where "Barney Fife needs someone to stop"....

There are a couple of threads about this device on this forum from a year or two ago and one member who is a retired Oregon State Trooper said that it is illegal for use in Oregon and that the "policy was not not allow them on Oregon highways".

I bet he looks like a pilot taxing a tail dragger. For those that don't understand, when you taxi a plane with a small swivel wheel in the back instead of a front landing gear the plane sets at an angle and the pilot must "zig zag" side to side to see where he or she is going. In this case, it would be necessary to see past the camper for the mirrors would be a couple of feet too short.
