Camper Size and Finding Camp Site

We have a 2018 Cougar 29rld at 34' in length. I'm concerned about finding camp sites that we can back in or pull through. And also have room to park Tow vehicle.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Thank You
Greg

Almost all of your concern needs to be centered around "WHERE" you want to camp and the facilities available there. If you're looking at national parks, state parks and recreation areas, then you're going to find that most are not equipped for longer RV's. What's a "longer RV" ??? That depends on what's available "where you want to park". Some parks have sites to accommodate "longer RV's" and some simply don't. Then "compound the problem" at parks that don't use a reservation system and chances are you'll find the smallest "pop-up camper" in the longest site in the park and the longest RV trying to "squeeze into the smaller sites.... Why? Because most people don't think about "the other guy's requirements" and focus on "Hey, we'll have more room if we take that big site"..... Human nature? Yup, and it's not likely to change......

That said, we just returned from a 6000 mile trip down I-75 to Nashville, then west on I-40 to Las Vegas with stops in a number of places. We were triple towing with a total length of around 70'. We didn't have any problems in any campgrounds (we stayed in public and military parks). Only in Memphis were we unable to reserve a pull-through site. There were none in the campground, so there was no means to even try. Other than that "facility limitation" we were able to find "pull through sites" by calling ahead 2 or 3 hours from the destination. We stayed in full service campgrounds at casinos and KOA's on the trip heading west, we stayed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas for 2 weeks and were in a 90' pull-through site" so we didn't need to unhook the two trailers from each other.

On the trip back east, we stayed in a KOA in Silt, CO, a private campground in Sterling, CO, a private campground in Lincoln, NE, a private campground in Davenport, IA, and the last night, in the Cracker Barrel parking lot in St Joseph, MI.

We didn't make any reservations except for the three 'long stays", one week in Memphis, one week in Williams, AZ and 2 weeks in Las Vegas. Otherwise, it was all "spur of the moment site locations".... We didn't have any problems finding sites, but few of them would qualify as "RV resorts". Most were pull through sites with a "commercial feel". They were quiet, comfortable, well worth the average $20 a night and long enough for "our 70 feet".....

if you're reserving sites online through either reserveamerica or recreation.gov, you'll input the length of your unit there and it will show you what sites are available that you'll fit in.

I do realize that sometimes even this doesn't work out, as I had problems a few years back trying to get into a site that the 'website' said was big enough for my trailer.

another option is to utilize google earth to look at satellite images, although it's really going to depend on when the images were taken and what type of tree cover there is.

We upgraded to this 34' long Cougar last month, and had to cancel one reservation we had for our previous 29' TT, as this one won't fit in that site at all, we've been there and know, LOL

good luck! Just do your homework, it's not all that hard to find sites you'll fit into

I've fit my 29' trailer in 20' spots many times. It all depends on the layout of the site.

We found that if it's a state/national park to park the rv somewhere & go check the sites 1st before towing into them. Had several state they had "big rig" sites only the find out they absolutely do have a huge site but with the narrow roads & low tree limbs that that "big rig" can't get to that site or as stated find a pop up in it.

Correct. I have reserved "45 foot" sites that barely accommodated my rig, let alone my truck, and I have reserved and stayed in "30 foot" sites that swallowed my truck and trailer with 10 feet to spare on either end. It all really comes down hoping the reservation sites are accurate.

Really? You are only 34 feet....no problem.

34 feet is nothing in the RV world.

Relax
Enjoy

At times I think I'd really like having only 34' instead of our 40' !

The question is somewhat easy. Know your overall combo length, phone or web check places you want to visit and see what's available. If you have a location in mind and are not sure, list it here maybe others have intel about max. lengths, before checking yourself.

At least here in Oregon, most of the parks have notes on them stating what length a site can accommodate and I have found them to be accurate. The Oregon parks normally have notes on them if there is a constriction (IE trailers over 20' may have trouble parking... etc).

Worst case, you may have to park your truck not in your site.

I like my outback as its small enough to fit in our state campgrounds which were designed in an era when station wagons pulled 16-17ft trailers around

NY State Parks also usually list the trailer length accommodations. There is also another site I use that has multiple pictures for about 80-90% of all sites from every state park in NY.

I usually have 3 tabs opened when searching sites...reserve America, google earth, and the one mentioned above.

I also purchased a 29rld last September.
Very nice rig. Though I have only used it 8 times (Wife is retiring in 2 weeks). I do my homework and have had no issues.
Have fun.

The info on max length in recreation.gov seems to be more accurate than it used to be. We had a 37' 5er for the last 3 years, and never had a problem with a recreation.gov campsite. For private campgrounds, campgroundreviews.com will tell you if the campground can handle big rigs. If the site lists it can handle big rigs, then you will have no problem with a 34' unit.

I have a Cougar 29BHS. I haven't really ran into any problems yet. I look at the lengths online if they're listed. Another thing I've done when going somewhere I've never been, is to see if there is a Google street view. Some campgrounds have them! We are going to Gulf Islands National Seashore next month. I made the reservation on recreation.gov. I was able to look around the campground first on Google street view. Picked my site that way. I'd say that most campsites do not have the street view, unfortunately. Never hurts to check though or at least look at it on Google earth. You can measure the sites on Google Earth.

I wouldn’t worry so much about that., unless your pulling with a big cab tractor. I’m 30’ + hitch extension and a quad cab Chevy w/6’.6” bed, overall it’s long and most places accommodate 40’ + w/ room for parking. At least this is what I have found in NY, Pa, NJ and Conn. Haven’t been all over YET!!!!!
