Towing a Montana 3150RL with 2008 GMC 2500HD Diesel

Is anyone towing a Montana 3150RL 5th wheel with a 2008 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crewcab 4X4 Duramax? It was suggested that I put on air bags and it will be fine. The 3150RL pin weight is 1965 lbs and the dry weight is 11,110 and GVWR of the trailer is 13,965lbs, but with our stuff loaded we would be at 12,110 lbs. I appreciate any input.

Thanks,

David

I don't have your truck or trailer, but the pin weight you have listed is a little low. It will probably be closer to 2500 +/-. If you haven't done so already, you may want to post this question on the Montana owners forum.

I went online and looked up the towing specs for your truck. You didnt specifiy whether or not it was a long or short box but according to what I have read, the maximum towing capacity for 5th wheel would be (a) for a long box ------ 12,700 lbs. (b) for a standard size box it is `13,900 lbs. There are different capacities for a trailer as opposed to a 5th wheel but to me it is the weight that the truck is towing --- 5th wheel or trailer - shouldnt make any difference - should it?
I have a 2005 GMC Duramax 2500HD and it will easily tow our 28 ft Cougar 5th but it is considerably lighter than yours.

I am new to this forum but not new to pulling a 5er. I am active on other forums and have read a lot on what a 3/4 ton truck can pull since I have one.
My guide has been GCVW, which on my truck is 20K and then your payload on the rear and front axles. Pin weigth under 1.7K for a 5er when loaded for a 3/4 ton truck.

Per the Trailer Life towing Guide for 2010 and 2009. The Chevy 3/4 ton truck Crew Cab Long Bed Durmax diesel, the trailer weight is 13K and the short bed is 13.9K, can tow this size of a trailer.
Hope this helps you?
Jim

The bottom line with all of our tow vehicles when towing a 5th wheel is GAWR and tire load range. Almost all 5th wheels in the 13K GVWR and above will overload all of the 3/4 trucks.

That truck will pull the trailer anywhere you want to go without a problem. I had the same truck with a different name (Chevy) At that time I had a trailer with a dry weight of 12,500lbs and a pin weight of 3100lbs. I assume you have an Allison tranny.

Your in good shape

Enjoy

I have a 2007 3/4 ton chev. crew cab short box clasic and currently pull a 290RK Cougar with a 19' boat behind it. I travel at highway speeds up and down some really high hills and only drop one gear out of overdrive. You hardly know its there. I currently have a 324RLQ Mountaineer on order and plan on doing the same...(hope to be under 75' to stay legal). I do not for see any problems with power but may decide later to either put on an extra leaf or add bags.

And with a 3100# pin weight your truck was SUPER overloaded.

Undisputed!
