Portable waste tank

Have been thinking of getting one. I'll be staying somewhere once a year in an area with no hookups. What do people think of them, are they worth the hassle, what size would be This is the one I was thinking of. I have the 20 gal version. I've used it once in two years, but future plans dictate I'll need to use it again. The larger version when full, IMO, would be way too heavy. The 20 gallon version is already heavy when it's full. So dump your tank (black or gray) at about 1/3 full assuming you have 40 gallon waste tanks. Last thing you want to do is over fill the portable, then the hose from the camper to the portable will be full of either gray matter or black matter.

If you have a ladder, DON'T hang it on your camper ladder. I have to assume this area you're going to has a dump station nearby?

Yes it does. It's a state park in the adirondacks. We are going for over a week and know tanks won't last.

They are not cheap, but yes a week can push the limits of your tanks so you may need to invest in one.

If that state park has toilet & shower facilities I'd recommend using them & only using the rv facilities at night.
As said those totes are expensive, a pain to haul full, a bigger pain to store for traveling & believe me they fill very quickly.
If you do get one make up a very short hose, just long enough to attach to the tote as close to the rv as possible, this will prevent some spillage.
I had one I used for about a week & sold it, after that I didn't stay if I needed one of those.

It comes with a short sewer hose just for that purpose of filling and dumping.

I've had the same 35 gallon one now for 11 years this coming June. Most of the State Parks in Texas are not full hookups so we often use it. Being just the two of us we don't need it for black tank but the DW does like her baths, so generally I use it every other day. I used to drag it behind the truck but a couple of years ago I bought a 12 volt transfer pump and now I set it in the bed of the truck and pump it full then drive to the dump station and dump it. Takes maybe 15 minutes round trip.
A good investment if you're staying a while.

I have the 28 gallon version and it is BIG ..bigger then i thought it would be.. stayed at Watkins glen state park last fall and it worked out nice..it comes with a bracket to tow behind the truck..just used for gray water... I like javis idea about the 12 volt pump.. I also want to get a collapsible fresh water bladder and a DIFFERENT 12 volt pump just for that..Watkins glen only had electric at the site.

Pay attention to what was said about filling/emptying the tank. Spill this on the ground by your site and you will have no friends, no one will drop by for beer and people will frown when they walk by. Once you spill the goodies it's not going to be cleaned up very easily! I'm just sayin'....

Nice to have 100 gallons (2-3 weeks) before dumping though.

So, that's what I been doing wrong... you mean all I need to do is pour a little black tank juice on the ground and them talkative neighbors will leave us alone..

Yes. We have a 35 gallon one and plan to use it on our next trip. We know from past experience that our kitchen gray water tank doesn't hold enough for a week. We were hooked up and washing dishes and the water decided to not go down. Soooo we had to pack up, hook up and head to the nearest dump station,and of course it was dark out so that made it even more fun.
Now we have our portable critter and have no worries about having to do that again at 8 P.M. We may not use it frequently but if it's more than 5 days we'd have to be prepared.

I and my wife tested positive for Covid back last July.. we were both totally A symptomatic and had zero illness... We quarantined in our TT for the 14 days in the driveway of my pole barn. I have a 38 gallon black tank. I was unsuccessful in getting a Honey wagon that was able to empty my tank when it indicated it was about 3/4 full. They said their pumps would suck too hard and could damage my tank. I purchased a 42 Gallon portable tank and never got a chance to use it. A friend owns a porta John company and he said his pump is a low pressure suction unit that he uses to do do travel trailers all the time as well as his porta johns... so there it sits brand new, never used... not sure I'll ever use it so may just put it on the swap site locally and see who might want it. Sorry... long story...

Side note to the last post... The black tank indicator was incorrect. There's a surprise.. The two of use over 14 days barely had the 38 gallon tank even half full according to my friend who pumped it. So depending on the number of people, it takes a lot to fill even 38 gallons. Sorry, rambling

We bought 2 x 21 gallon Camcos last year and a Flojet pump. The two tanks sit beside the 5th wheel hitch when we're camping. I made a wooden platform that keeps them level for filling. Worked very well. If you have room in the bed of your truck, a bigger tank would be good.

About 20 years ago my BIL started following us when we went camping. His kids (ouir nephews) would eat us out of house and trailer. They would devour every snack, every drink they got their hands on. I'll never deny anyone food but it was getting obvious they didn't want to spend the money butmdidn't mind taking advantage of our "giving nature". It also became a noticicable trend that they would never have enough food to last the duration of the stay. My DW would take enough for everybody (of course).

On one of the last trips we went to a Yogi Bear CG in Luray, VA. We booked for a week, they came in on the week end. We left on a Saturday after they arrived the day before. When we were packing up I opened the black tank and the hose blew off the valve. I closed it but a gallon must have spilled onto the ground. We were in an end site, they were behind us. I've never seen so many flies gather so quickly since I worked on my cousin's dairy farm. BIL's family were at the pool at the time so they were unaware of what they were going to return to.

A few hrs later he called and asked what happened. I told him it was an accident but now he had an idea of what it feels like to be "crapped on" when camping. After "airing a few things out" the next time they went camping withus they bought food and fed themselves. So as far as I was concerned, it was worth it.

You are correct.. the DW and I have never filled our 49 gallon black tank even in 8 nights..

I’m a bit too OCD... in 4-5 days, two of us will get the black to 2/3 full. I subscribe to the “more water is better” for black tanks. Every time I use it (with full hookups) I flush more water after the initial flush. Just to make sure there is enough water to help things break down. I have yet to have a black tank sensor go bad. Gray tank... that’s another story but we have that fixed now and all is well in that department.
