Winter in the southeast

How far south do you have to go to hit temps comparable to Florida panhandle? I’m in Maryland so am planning a short trip for after New Years. 2nd week of January
I’ve been reading the other post about ochlochnee state park? (Think I got it right) like to go that far south but we are watching my sons Australian cattle dog while he is away. My daughter can watch him for a few days so we are good to go for a few days. I’m not comfortable bringing him along right now because we do a lot of sightseeing and don’t want him alone in the camper.
I was looking at Charleston area and weather seemed comparable to Florida panhandle. And it’s half the distance. Has anyone been to James island county Park? It seems nice. Doe South Carolina have pretty mild winters? We are looking to explore Charleston ..maybe antique shops ,book stores etc
It’s 35 here as I type this and 52 in Charleston....is that normal for this time of year?

This is Finn. We don’t want to leave him too long as he already misses my son

A lot of that is going to really depend on the weather. You can have lows in the 20's one day and lows in the upper 40's the following week. I would try for Southern Georgia at least not too familiar with the S Carolina coast, but usually if youre pretty close to the water that seems to temper the wild fluctuations.in temperature.

If you're staying in a park that has electricity, I would suggest an infrared heater, and an electric blanket. Saves on propane use. We have one of the infrared heaters in a ice cherry wood cabinet, we leave it in the main room to prevent the heater kicking on every 30 minutes.

We stayed in James Island County Park recently. I told myself I would never go back. The park is fine and the city is great but they seem to have no interest in trimming the low hanging live oak branches above the streets. I'm not talking about twigs either, big 3-6 inch limbs. And not just a couple. Our 5th is 13' 3" tall and I don't know how I avoided damage. I had to weave all across the road.
I could easily be confusing Charleston and Savannah's Skidaway Island State Park. Both have the same issues.
Old part of both cities are super cool. Lots of walking, looking, and shopping. Parking is a major issue with both.
Look on accuweather for monthly historic averages.

We stayed in the James Island County Park last winter. Loved it! Lots to do and see in the Charleston area. We especially enjoyed the pier at Folly Beach, which is now being demolished and then rebuilt. Yes as gearhead said, you need to pay attention as you approach. The live oaks can be hazardous.

We stayed at James Island in 2019. I don't recall an issues with branches, but I'm a good bit lower to the ground than you. Give them a call and see what they say; it may have been one particular area of the campground that could br problematic. When we were there they offered a shuttle service (for a fee) to take you to the touristy part of town. To us it was well worth the cost of not having to find parking, and we were exhausted from walking around all day in near-100 degree heat. There were also free shuttles around town. They may not be offered now due to the virus. The town itself is very tourist-friendly. Be sure to go to the visitors center & pick up a map of restroom facilities around town. They also have a free app for your phone that does the same. Be sure to visit the Karpeles Manuscript Museum (free). It's quite the place, and IMO underappreciated.

Southern GA may offer similar temps as the Panhandle. We go camping each year in January just south of Brunswick and light jacket temps are usually the norm.

Safe travels & Happy Holidays.

I was watching a YouTube video about James Island ...they mentioned the trees but thought they may be exaggerating. Yeah that doesn’t sound like a fun trip for me. I’m 13’4” with my old truck. I have to measure again when I get my new hitch installed with new truck

If staying in GA stay south, stay near the water to mitigate temps. The down side is the humidity and there are more cloudy/misty/dreary days IMO. Stayed a week one year in the winter at Edisto Island SC and it was bleak - we much prefer the FL panhandle.

Guess there are no shortcuts in life ....if you want sunshine in the winter you have to be willing to make the journey

Thanks that seems to be the general consensus. Will stick with panhandle and south

Look for a RV park outside Charleston and just drive your tow truck in. Same with Savannah.
There's a state park near Amellia Island Florida that has always interested me...Fort Clinch State Park. Near Jacksonville and on the ocean, or bay, your choice.

The winter weather in Southern Georgia is very close to that in the Florida Panhandle.

I highly recommend the Coastal Georgia RV Resort in Brunswick, GA. (https://www.coastalgarvresort.com).

Average weather in January, southern Georgia and the panhandle area is 66 degrees in the daytime, 36 degrees at night. You can leave your beach chairs at home.

Thanks I will jot down Fort Clinch. I may just do Charleston and find a decent place a little further out. Another family member wants to follow along in they’re fifth wheel as well. And my time is limited for this trip. More of a shakedown trip for my new TV

We are just outside of Savannah right now. Cool to cold nights. Days are nice if the sun is out, and no wind. Was rainy and overcast on Sunday, bleak at best. Savannah has changed a bit over the years. Parking for River St is nearly impossible now. Especially if you're driving anything larger than a mid-sized sedan. We were hoping to do some of the sights but apparently Covid has caused some if the touristy things (like Tybee) to nearly close up. We should have done Stone Mountain, GA again or Northern FL. We're very fond of the caverns in FL Pan Handle. But in the end, we're away for Christmas in the camper that we love so it's all good. We have plenty of enjoyment just being out and about.
