Custom data cable for the Progressive HW30C EMS

I purchased the hard-wired Progressive HW30C EMS for my trailer and wanted to mount the remote display/control head at a location that was too far for the provided data cable to reach.

I read on here that the cable was a custom pin-out and would be difficult to create on my own. I looked at the wires in the Progressive cable and compared this to a standard 4-wire phone cable and they are identical except for one difference - the plug on one end of the cable is reversed.

With this information, I was easily able to create my own cable at the length I needed for my installation. I connected the remote display/control head to the EMS main unit and it works fine.

I thought others might find this information useful.

If the plug is RJ45 then you can also use standard ethernet cable. A pin for pin connection is a "straight thru" cable and a reversed pin out connection is a "crossover cable". They are available in varying lengths but finding the crossover cable make take some more searching as they are typically used for connecting one computer directly to another computer and becomes less relevant with the prevalence of WIFI.

No, it's an RJ-11 (4-pin), just like what is used to connect a standard phone to the jack on the wall. I think an RJ-12 end will fit (because I think they are the same size) but an RJ-45 is definitely too big.

Just in case someone is considering this without the knowledge or tools to make their own.
