Mysterious Loss of power in slides
Hi. I could use some help solving a mystery. I have a Carbon 348 50amp with a 5000W generator.
Until I get my truck, I have the unit parked and have been working on it and getting to know its workings. I have a heavy, heavy duty outdoor extension cord to plug into a 110V socket to keep the battery charged. I don't leave it plugged in for extended periods, only when I am working on it. Up until now, my slides worked fine - even on just battery power. I have run the generator to test and it has been working fine.
Today, none of the slides work and the generator will not fire. The battery indicator says fully charged, the outlet and house fuses have not been tripped and none of the breakers in the RV have been tripped. The 15amp fuse for the slides seems fine (no red light indicator suggesting it has been blown). The awning works, the lights are on so there is power when I am plugged in.
Any ideas? I can't do much with the slides in. I can't get into the garage because the first discovered flaw in my brand new unit is that the locks on the rear door do not work. I can unlock it from the inside but not outside with the key.
We have had lightning in the area but no damage seen on the RV.
Any help will be most appreciated

Sounds like your battery disconnect switch is in the disconnected position. You must have that switch closed so the converter can maintain the battery and keep it charged. The switch is closed when you can not remove the red plastic 'key'.

If not plugged into shore power while operating slides it will drain your battery quickly especially if your dealer went cheap & installed starting type batteries rather than deep cycle.
If there's CCA, CA or MCA followed by a number on the battery tops you have starting batteries & a few deep discharges will ruin those.

Some items on a rig (the levelers I know for a fact, the slides I'm pretty sure about, I have no idea about a generator starter) use the battery as a short-term source of bulk current. They won't operate off just the low current generated by the charger/converter (i.e., shore power), the battery has to be physically there and in good condition.
Now my point is: you say the "battery indicator" says the battery is fully charged, but if you're plugged into shore power, you're reading the voltage being put out by your converter, not the health of the actual battery.
Unplug from shore power, and see if the battery indicator suddenly tells you that your battery is a pumpkin.

I don't know if you have a different switch than I do, but on mine, the key stays captive in both ON and OFF positions. You can remove the key only by turning it about 30° past OFF.

Thanks everyone.
Where is the battery disconnect switch? Would that cause the generator not to fire? Also why would they not work if plugged into shore?
Where is the “key”
I do not recall turning anything around the battery off
I will go to RV today (it’s parked crosstown) and try the battery indicator when not plugged in. I’ll get back to you all.

Doc, on the driver’s side, look in the smaller door to the right of the propane storage door and you will find the red key in that panel.

Found it.
I found the battery disconnect key and turned it to "on" and the slides and generator now work. Funny thing is that they worked before and I have touched the key so the battery must have discharged.
I have the key set to "on" and the shoreline plugged in. Will that recharge the battery?
Funny....battery disconnect....does "on" mean disconnected? Or does "off" mean disconnected?

Yes, but if the battery was run down it will significantly reduce it;s lifespan.
Funny....battery disconnect....does "on" mean disconnected? Or does "off" mean disconnected?
[ B]Don't think of it as indicating the switch but rather the state of the circuit. Just like a lightswitch when you turn it "on" it completes the circuit and off disconnects the circuit.[/B]

Check your relay switch also. The relay costs is around $75. Luckily the manual over ride works pretty well too. (1/4" drive Left side of motor)
