The movie "The Alamo" was shot at Alamo Village north of Brackettville on the Shahan Ranch. You used to be able to go tour the village which was a movie set for many movies shot there. When old lady Shahan passed a number of years ago her children had no interest in keeping the site open to the public. The Shahan ranch was a huge and working ranch; not sure if it still is. Our church had a cowboy re-enacting group that competed there against others as they put on skits. Alamo Village also had folks that had shoot outs on main street. Sad when it closed. The scenes of "San Antonio" in Lonesome Dove were shot on the main street of the village.

I've been to the old village several times. Funny you commented on that, I dated a girl that was from Brackettville and was an extra in the movie. We both were students a University of Corpus Christi, now A&M. That was '68

A lot of Texans invested in the making of the Alamo movie. Gov Bill Daniel provided horses and cattle. The McCollough brothers (oilfield services) invested dollars and never saw a return.
I wish someone would make a good movie on Jim Bowie.
For those interested, the book THREE ROADS TO THE ALAMO by William C Davis is great. Basically biographies of Bowie, Travis, and Crockett. Not much on the Alamo battle. Please disregard the story of my ggggrandfather James D Reeves....he sold Bowie some land that he didn't own. Somehow escaped the Bowie knife. LOL
Bunch of Reeves in my tree too

It is a decent RV park. But the town of West Memphis is depressing. Bring your own food to cook or grill. We ate dinner in one of the nastiest Mexican restaurants I've been in.
I don't remember signs showing the water level, but then it's been more than a day since I was there ...

As for West Memphis, you're right, it's definitely a "don't go after dark" kind of environment, at least it seems that way.... We spent most of our time on the other side of the river but the only way to get there (other than swimming) is a danged 10 mile drive...

It sounds like not much has changed in West Memphis, a run down WalMart, a few "second rate places to eat" and a Church's Fried Chicken hooked to a Tenneco gas station.

Apologies to anyone who lives there, but seems to me the best part of West Memphis is seeing it in your rear view mirror.

There's a casino complex on the Mississippi side of the river, about 15 miles south of Horn Lake in Tunica called "Hollywood Casino" that is a much more "resort like camping experience". We've got reservations there for a week this summer. Cost per night, if I remember correctly, is $26 for full hookups in a 50 amp site. The last time we stayed at that casino, it was part of a major casino chain, so it may have changed a little, but last time through, it was "like a golf course" everywhere in the campground. i believe the Harrah's campground, a few miles closer to Memphis, is still closed. Last time we stayed there was around 2011 if I remember correctly.

I remember the little 2 story building with the water level painted on it. I also recall the rutted out pot holed road after crossing the leve to get to Tom Sawyers. We went into West memphis to get fuel before heading back east and was not impressed with any of it.

Didn't realize San Jacinto was that close to Memphis, but it's been a while since I was to either place.

Good ways from each other but a good number of Tennessee folks fought for Texas

Last time I was in Memphis we were cooking 11-37-0 fertilizer on Presidents Island. I do remember Tuncia and the casino, we would run over there while waiting for the railroad to bring in more cars of ammonia and acid.
I do remember a hole in the wall catfish place in West Memphis that was very good and reasonable, but that was at least 25 years ago.

I grew up in Arkansas many years ago and West Memphis claim to fame was the dog racing track. It was a little bit "out there" to go to a place that allowed betting. This was about the time of the illegal casinos in Hot Springs before they were raided and closed down.
