Need some advice on a slide out switch before I go any further

Went to let the two back slides on the 5'er out this afternoon to install a fireplace I bought. Once again the big dining slide didn't make a sound. Pecking on the switch has worked in the past to get it to move. Didn't work today so I took the two screws out and gently wiggled the switch out. When I got it out and turned it around, one of the prongs was bent at a 90 degree angle. That metal is very stiff so I don't think there is no way I bent it. My question is. Before I take some pliers and straighten it to put it back in, was it bent for a reason. Maybe it's not supposed to be used or something. I hope this is the reason the slide hasn't been working right because if it's supposed to be used it wasn't and if it's not it had to be keeping the other prongs from making good contact. Any advice would be appreciated.

Straighten it out. Then just look at the connector that it plugs into. If there is a wire in that “slot” it was needed, if the slot is empty it won’t hurt anything.

Turns out the switch is the problem with the slide at this point. Straightened out the prong and got it back in somewhat. Enough to get the slide out. Problem is the wires on the female end or the plug are so short it won't set square in the hole. The right side of the male end keeps coming back out. Haven't pulled the whole cover off to look behind it. There are tons of wires back there and if one comes off I won't know where to put it back. May have to give it a try though or I'm going to keep having this problem.

If the switch is in the monitor panel, then you may be able to move the harness around to gain “length”. Another option would be to “pull it up” and tape it to the bundle to take some of the strain off.

Not really familiar with what a monitor panel looks like. To me this looks like all the switches are screwed to the paneling and it has a wood trim screwed around the whole thing. Four screws hold the wood trim on. If I take those four screws out I would assume the paneling with the switches would come out as a whole. Haven't got the nerve to do that yet. I pulled on the female end with some pliers and it is tight. Could not get any play in it that way

It looks to me like the 4 screws hold the entire thing. I say, go for it.

I believe that "entire status display panel" is really just several "switch cutouts in the wall" and the dark cherry frame/door is just a "picture frame" that's mounted over that section of the luan wall. It's not a "switch panel assembly that mounts over the wiring harness bundle"...

If so, then removing the frame/door won't help you access the switch wiring. It runs down the channel in the wall and into the basement just to the left of the stairs. If you have access to remove the stair treads, you might get access to the wiring bundle there. If not, then the only access I know of is the aft wall of the front passthrough. Crawl into your passthrough and imagine where that wall would be, along the passthrough wall. Remove that section of the passthrough aft wall, (it's held in place with several #2 Robertson square drive screws. Then, with that aft wall removed, you can gain access to the area under the stairs and see clearly where that wire bundle comes down the wall.

Take note of the color of the wires connected to that switch and you should find the same color wires. See if there's a way to rearrange how they are secured to the trailer framing so you can gain a few inches. That will allow you to more easily "plug in that switch" ...

Really, it's much easier than it sounds with the above description, so crawl into your pass through and take a look. I think you'll see what I'm describing.

I will look at that tomorrow evening.

Guess I should have put on my glasses and put that other glass down before I looked too close.

Looks like a framed door to cover the switches to me but I'm looking at it on a 28" monitor. Remember this, if you get confused about the wires you have two more switches that are most likely wired the same way. When I go to remove something like that I depend on my phone by taking lots of pictures. That's saved me from many a "now where did that go?" CRS moments.

Get a piece of wire same gauge, pref same color. Put male spade connector on one end and female spade on other end. Now your lead should be long enough.

This kind of shoddy work is so common in the RV industry.

Thanks. Still didn't get to fool with it this weekend. Got another project on the camper finished though. Will post pics when I can.

Moving forward is always a good thing, even if you took a short detour.

Problem is still here. Went to let the slide back in this afternoon since I was going to get new tires installed tomorrow. It didn't make a sound and won't move. Gently worked the wires in the hole and there was more wire behind there in that wad than I thought. It does have 5 wires. Reading across different combinations of the 5 wire plug with the switch out, 2 of them have 13.6 volts. Any ideas on what to try next. Is there a way to know what post on the switch to ohm to see if it's working. I would really like to figure this out myself since the only dealer is an hour away. Haven't ever tried to let the slide in manually. Don't know if that even works.

I believe there is another slide switch right beside that one ???

If so, pull it out and check power on each pin. Both of them "should be wired exactly the same, just connected to different slide motors. So, if the red wire on the "good slide switch connector" is +12VDC, then that's what should be on the other one.

Something else you can try, to confirm that the actual switch is good, is while you have the "known good switch and connector out, just plug the questionable connector into the known good switch and try it. That will rule out any possibility that the switch is bad internally.....

I thought about that. I'm just afraid I might end up with 2 that didn't work then. 😂
