Reminiscing over threads in this forum through the past 10 or so years: Way back then (in the "first decade of this century") there were actually "arguments posted on the forum" from people who ABSOLUTELY refused to believe that a propane tank valve could "lock out propane" if it was turned on too fast. One, in particular said "It's impossible for that to happen"....
Now, over the past 8 or 10 years, it's become "almost commonplace" to ask if the member with a furnace problem has closed his propane tanks, disconnected them from the regulator, let it "bleed down", reconnected the regulator and SLOWLY opened the tank valve.... Even those who "argued it was impossible" just 15 years ago, are now some of those who are asking those questions....
So, why did I bring this up? Through the years, propane valves have changed with the addition of better safety devices. However, at the same time, more and more parts are coming from china, being produced and sold for less money, honestly, IMO, they are cheaply made, fail often, don't work unless you follow "VERY SPECIFIC PARAMETERS" and much of what comes from the factory is "lowest bid, poorly built, imported junk that'll work until the warranty expires....
Just look at tires, batteries, vinyl "pleather" on chairs, foam cushions, mattresses, faucets, PEX fittings (not the PEX, the cheap fittings), the stereo, the speakers, the television, the heat ducting, and the list could go on and on....
But, back to propane valves, there was a time when few of us even believed it was possible, then the valves were "upgraded to be safer" and that worked, but then that pesky "lowest bid contract" raised its UGLY HEAD, and we're now finding that valve lockout is not a "rare occurance" but mentioned in nearly every "why is my furnace not staying lit" thread......
This is, IMO, one of those "make it better and now it doesn't work" type of situations.....

And I used to carry an aluminum wrench to disconnect the propane line from the tank to avoid sparks.

I have a couple questions to clarify a couple things I read here:
1) The OP mentioned a couple times that the stove burners had clean flames, but yet the furnace was still inoperative.
2) Is the result of LP gas shutting off due to opening too fast a defect or a safety function?

The safety valves are designed to shut off the flow of propane if an excessive flow is detected. It is a safety feature, I believe in case the cylinders are open and in a crash the hoses get ripped off.
The furnace is a high volume appliance, stove burners aren’t. You can light a stove burner and then turn the LP off, the burner will stay good for a bit before dying out.

Here's a link with a video that speaks to the shut off. It's pointed at gas fire pits but the same holds for an RV tank. It also talks about a 20lb. tank freezing up which I've had happen on an RV. You're in FL so probably not an issue . Also had the on/off valve on a 20lb. tank refuse to function properly and not let enough fuel out to make a decent flame. Fortunately it was something I could exchange so took it in and got a full bottle....the one I gave them back was full as well. This v
