Tail Gate Dropping

Curious if any one else has had this issue. Drove from southern Missouri to Nashville on some of the roughest interstate in Kentucky. While getting off the interstate by the KOA I got a warning to check the trailer wiring connection. I'm sure almost all of us have seen this before that the connector works loose. Being literally a few hundred yards from the campgrounds I figured I would check it when I stopped. Pulling into the campgrounds I hear this ugly crunch, I discovered that the tailgate had dropped and now was embedded in to the front of my Raptor. Talking with neighbor in the campground the same thing had happened to him some time ago. Of course Chevy says they know of no issues.
FYI Brand new 2019 Chevy Silverado 3500 CrewCab with 8 foot bed.

Heard of an issue on the newer Fords doing this mainly the power operated ones Not GM or Ram though. As a precaution I lock my tailgate, it is all mechanical no electronics.
On a side note I have had the latch on my bed cover vibrate open on some rough roads but gravity was working in my favor to keep it closed.

Thanks, Still researching on my end. The guy said that it happened to him actually installed an eye bolt and added a safety chain so gate could not drop. I think I am going to use one of the smaller ratchet straps from the fifth wheel hitch over the top of the gate and down to the safety chain loop on the bumper hitch.

Had mine drop once after I let someone else close it. One thing about the Dodge tailgate is that it is so damn heavy that everyone within three counties will hear and feel it drop. Didn't cause any damage but since then if someone else closes it I open and close it myself and just smile at the dirty looks I get.

Just had the recall completed on my 2016 Ram for the possibility of the power locking tailgate opening while driving.
It affects 2015 to 2018 issued May 9, 2019.

I did not know if that was a manual open tailgate or not. I will say after 8 personal pickups, 4 more work pickups, each one newer and with a heavier tailgate. I had my 2002 tailgate drop once. The noise was like a crash with another vehicle. It happened minutes after I closed it and headed onto a highway. I learned 1 important thing and doing so it has never happened again. After closing the tailgate, pull on it to make sure it's latched.

I haven’t had a problem with my tailgate, but after reading this thread realize how nonshelaunt I have been about closing it. Thanks for the tip. I’ll be checking the tailgate more carefully from now on.
