2005 Ram diesel

I am looking at a 2005 Ram 2500 diesel with a 5.9 cummings and 78900 miles on it. I Have a 2017 37 ft 5th wheel that weighs 15000
Will it be enough truck for the camper and is it dependable?

What does the payload sticker say on the door post of the truck? 15k GVWR on the camper will have a pin weight of 3000 to 3750 pounds. That doesn't leave you a lot figuring it this way. That amoynt will cpme out of ypur payload. Others will chime in with other opinions. This will at least kick off the conversation.

First off, if it has the Cummings in it will incinerate in no time, now if it has the cummins in it you have a reliable pre-emissions power plant. Now to the weight, depending what you load in the truck you will probably be fast approaching your RAWR with a 15K 5th wheel.

A 15k trailer does not belong on any 3/4 ton truck, even the NEW, improved, high weight rated trucks.

That 5.9 Cummins is about as bulletproof as you'll find, but unfortunately the 2500 ain't enough truck for the 15k 5er.

The Ram is a dependable TV, but a 15,000# 5er is too much even for a current 3500 SRW.

You didn't give much info as to how the truck is configured, (4x4, 4 door, long bed, etc...) I couldn't find specs or a chart for a 2005, but I did find them for a 2004 (the specs start after page 6). They should be very similar, and will give you a good idea of what your limits would be.

As others stated, your pin would be 3000-3700 pound range. Regardless, that truck would be WAY too small a truck for that size of trailer. Good luck.

Well I'm going to say your pin will be in the area of 2700-3000 lbs if your RV has a GVWR of 15K. As others have already said, for safety and weight reasons, you need more truck.

What everyone is telling you is true. I moved up from a 2500 to a 3500 drw both 5.9 cummins ( the good engine) not just a big difference in safety and load but the quality of the ride! The truck you're looking at is a nice truck but not with that 5er! Stay safe.

Well sorry to say before 2013 Ram was extremely conservative with their GVWR and payloads, although they had pretty stout trucks, even the 3500 SRW only get to 9,900#. That is 100# less than current 2500’s!
If you can find a pre 2007.5, DRW then you will have enough payload to carry 15,000# 5er.
The fact that you are asking leads me think this could be your first rig. If that is the case for that 5er strongly suggest you find a very nice newer 2005 or newer, DRW.

The truck will pull and stop your rig, but as others have made very clear, it will be overloaded. You need a 3500; a DRW would be best. We pulled our Montana with a 2500 w/ exhaust brake and 6 speed for several years w/ no problems but we were still overloaded and now have the 3500 DRW and very happy with it.

In your first post you state the trailer weighs 15000 and in your most recent post you state it's 14K not 16K. Somehow your estimated weight changed from 15K to 14K, but your last post indicates a 2000 pound difference when actually, based on your first post, it's a 1000 pound difference.

Remember, you're going to add a hitch to your truck's payload, you'll have passengers, cargo in the bed, accessories you add to the truck as well as the pin weight.

So, taking "projected pin weight percentages" into consideration, we're looking at 15% to 25% as the pin weight, so you're looking at your reduced load falling somewhere between 150 pounds and 250 pounds less than earlier estimates. When you're dealing with a payload limit of 2000 pounds and you're anticipating a pin weight of 2700 to 3700 pounds, 250 pounds isn't going to make a significant difference in being "beyond just overloaded" even before you add passengers, hitch and cargo to the mix......

Well two things;
#1 Most likely without looking your Ram 2500 has a listed GVWR of 8,800# maybe as high as 9,200#, no payload sticker on a 2005. So a trip to the scales is required to get an idea of what you can carry.

#2. Please post the year, make and model of the 5er you are looking at, it could have a huge payload, therefore making the fit closer.

Just an FYI any 5er over about 10,000# maybe 9,000# and you will be exceeding the Ram’s GVWR.

I believe he is towing a 2017 327rlk cougar 5th wheel , weighing 10,300 empty and 12,500 gross. I don't think this changes much in terms of advice, but it is something to settle on.

Notanlines, Thanks, I looked at V2Wings other post, helps a lot.

Well based on V2Wings other post he already has both the 5er and the 2017 Cougar 327RLK.
So his first post seems to be was off on total weight, the 5er has an apparent GVWR of 12,580#.

So now the OP has decision to make I see he has three options.
#1. Trade the Trailer for a smaller unit or large TT, that will keep him in GVWR.

#2. Trade the TV for a post 2013 Ram with a GVWR that will carry the 5er within the TV GVWR. This could easily be a 3500 SRW.

#3. Hook it up and level it up and tow with the current combination.

Unless the OP puts a ton of stuff in the bed of the TV, he should be under the GRAWR, and even under the 3,195# ea. tire rating of the stock 265/70-16E tires.
He will be for sure OVER the 8,800# to 9,200# GVWR, likely in the range of 800# to 1,400#. If the TV has the Camper and Tow packages, he may not even need bags to tow level. I would strongly suggest three things.

#1. Use the following WEB site to get the equipment listing for his TV, it is a VIN specific listing. https://chrysler.custhelp.com/app/ch...listing_detail

#2. Once hooked up a trip to the scales, to know where he is at with weights and ratings.

#3. If not already equipped with an Exhaust Brake, get one installed, best on the market is PacBrake!

This is NOT a recommendation to tow over TV GVWR! That decision is the OP's decision ! He needs to be aware that doing so could have legal ramifications if involved in an accident.

These are the specs for the 2017 Cougar 327RLK from Keystone's WEB site.

Specs for 327RLK
Shipping Weight 10,315#
Carrying Capacity 2,265#
Hitch 2,180#
Length 37' 2"
Height 12' 3"

I took the truck because of condition and I had a look at the sticker on the 5er and it 12890 and since I only tow within 40 miles of home for the next few years and it should handle it for now and hopefully I can upgrade trucks by then.
Thanks again for all of your help.
