Good Sam... Pros and Cons

We’re considering becoming members. They seem to have a large selection of “stuff” for any situation, but is it too much?
We plan on making trips all over the east coast to start with but do most of our camping so far in state parks.
What’s your experience with them?

Good Sam Member

Been a member since getting in RV ing 5 years ago. Pleased in every respect. You pick and choose among all offerings of services. We have Deluxe Membership and Roadside Assist. We went to the Daytona Rally comp'ed by Camping World and we will be attending Atlanta Rally also comp'ed. That in itself is some benefit. Nothing bad to say about the programs.
Hope this helps.

If you use the discount enough to pay for it then it is a good deal. I am a state park camper and it doesn't work for me. I have been a member in the past and used it. They will junk mail you hard so be prepared for that.

We were lucky to nab a lifetime membership for $20 when the Ceo, Marcus was at our local Camping World grand opening -- he was giving stuff away left and right. So for us it's a bargain -- we do have the roadside assistance and a discount at camping world with GoodSams.

Paramenace. The membership works for us, we use the discount frequently and have the roadside assistance. We have had a nightmare experience with other roadside assistance programs (that's another story). I highly recommend some type of RV roadside assistance/towing the regular AAA stuff doesn't work!

We have used it the discount, the mapping feature, and the ability to locate good campgrounds. I bought the lowest membership for $25 and was given a certificate for a "free night of camping" worth up to $25. Basically I'm in for nothing this year, so it was worth it.

We also have it and use the trip planning and the roadside assistance. They also offer a Connection with Pilot/FlyingJ Truck Stops that offer discounts of 6 cents on gas and 8 cents on diesel and allows you to use the truck lanes. that alone gets my vote.

Just a heads up............

Most roadside assistance plans that provide towing do not provide towing for a DRW truck. "Good Sam" does.

I find it beneficial even though I only take advantage of the CW discounts and campsite discounts. (In our case, I can't perceive of a situation where our AAA Premier RV plan wouldn't provide more than adequate coverage, so we do not have roadside assistance thru Good Sam.)

However, I still wonder if I'm really getting a "Good Sam" discount when the campground quotes me a rate, and then when I ask for the Good Sam rate, they say "that is the Good Sam rate". This tends to happen once or twice each year.

You don't need to be a member to get the CG discount. They never ask to see any ID. most other goodies are free to anyone on their website.

Some campgrounds have asked me for my member ID.

This is an interesting post. No one has mentioned the State Samborees or club structure. We did our first Samboree this Spring, joined a local Good Sam Club, and had a great time this Summer camping with our new Good Sam friends. Coming off a brand specific camping club, the Good Sam club was a pleasant surprise.

I was a AAA member until this year. I called to upgrade to premier and they said that they do not tow fivers!!!
They do tow bumper pulls, Class A, etc. I lost a lot of faith in AAA.

Lazy Daze campground in Memphis TN not only asked to see the GS membership card, they wrote the number on the receipt. We also had to show it at Alexandria RV Park to get the discouint.... Both of these have been within the past week.

I would never NEVER think to tell a campground I was a member of an organization and ask for the member discount unless I was actually a member. Somehow, I don't think I could smile at the ugly guy in the mirror if I cheated that way......

Because of all the crooks taking advantages of discounts they are not entitled to, unfortunately many more GS campgrounds are now forced to ask to see your membership and some websites are actually validating your membership number to see if it's current or not! So next time you're aggravated that you have to produce your membership card, thank one of those who have made it this way!!!

If you camp more than a few days a year in GS parks (or competitors that will still give you a GS discount), and/or buy from Camping World, you will soon be rewarded with savings greater than your expense.

Good Sam

We like it. Being both Good Sam and roadside assistance, we are comp'ed for the Rally's. Works for us.
Almost all roadside plans use the same call centers and local service trucks.

We are A Good Sam lifetime members, use the Visa card for gas discounts and the points are very good. Also have Roadside Assistance and insure our TT thru their insurance arm.....they just front end another insurance carrier.

Love the free shipping from CW as a result of Good Sam membership.....done from time to time.

Solution to their junk mail....buy all the services they offer...no more junk mail. LOL......
