Payload Recommendation for F350 DRW?

Hey all,

I am looking at swapping up from an F350 SRW to an F350 DRW to tow a 2021 Raptor 423. I've found a candidate at a nearby dealership and they sent me the payload sticker from inside the door which rates it at 5232lbs max payload.

Am I crazy or does this not seem that much higher than my SRW which is rated at 4140?

Stats for the 5er

GVWR = 19000
Dry Weight = 15185
Hitch Weight = 3390

Should I be looking for a DRW build with more payload than that?

You really didn't give us enough info to kind of clarify the difference between the two. 4140 lbs sound pretty high for a F350 SRW unless it is a stripped down version, maybe 2WD, gas engine, etc. You also didn't say whether it was a 2020 or newer model, which possibly has a higher payload number because of the increase in the GVWR of the 2020 and 2021 trucks. Anyway, I have a 2016 F350 Dually that has a payload of 5270 lb. It would be even higher than that if it weren't for the fact that it's a King Ranch...so more "stuff" on it than say an XLT or even a Lariat. Some of the lesser equipped Dually trucks of that era are up closer to 5500 lb of payload...maybe a bit more.

Either way, my Dually is towing a Toy Hauler that has a 20,000 lb GVWR and I've had no issues with it being overloaded from a payload or any other standpoint.

Your also going from 4 wheels to 6 wheels so it’s going to be a much more stable and capable tow vehicle ..it’s going to have less of a chance to get squirrelly over bridge transitions and dips in the road...as well as having a better safety margin for rear wheel blowout

My guess based on limited information is that your SRW is an XL and maybe 4X2, the F350 that you are looking at is likely a King Ranch.
Our 2016 Ram Laramie 3500 DRW has a sticker payload of 5,411#, the fancier the truck the less payload.

Yeah, this is definitely one of the big reasons for me. Even though I am "under payload" with a minimally loaded rig (propane, no water, no toys in the garage, wife and 1yo daughter, B&W companion 25k in bed), it only leaves me with like ~150 lbs of breathing room which doesn't feel like a lot.

Knowing that the truck is going to be more stable, resist crosswinds, not get upset by air vacuums generated from large vehicles coming from the opposite direction makes me feel like I am going to enjoy the towing experience more. Which is the whole reason my family is getting the 5er in the first place.

Your thinking like a sensible person who cares about his family...congratulations on the new fifth wheel and sounds like new tow vehicle as well

Thanks! We are really excited!

I just wish I had learned all these things more quickly and *before* I pulled the trigger on the F350 SRW

Life lessons!

Separately, do you guys know what kind of a hit you take to gas mileage going from SRW with 3.55 to DRW with 4.10? 10%? 20%?

For reference, I average about 18-20 in my SRW when driving normally. I'm guessing that cuts in half when towing.

I’ve only had 4:10’s and in the past I don’t know that you could call my driving “normal”... I think your gonna be around 10-11 towing and not really sure while just driving..I only have around 700 miles on my dually

10-11 is better than I thought it would be! Even if I am getting 16-17 on average it would still be better than the Tundra I used to drive. I was happy when I got 12-13 in that truck

Oh yeah, Tundras are notorious fuel hogs, all while offering very little capacity as a TV to boot! The only full size trucks that are worse than them from a FE point of view were the Nissan Titans.

Oh yeah, absolute guzzlers. If I took it over the pass near my house, I was getting 9-10 for sure.

Don't get me wrong, I loved that truck and had a sick build, but yeah as a TV it was teeeeeeeerrible. Never even bothered to tow anything bigger than a U-haul trailer with it

My 2016 Dually, 4x4, 8' bed, 6.7 with a 3:73 rear end will get 17 to 17 1/2 MPG on the highway when not towing. I live in TN though, so nothing around here is flat and would probably go up a bit in the flatlands. I have the usual 1 to 2 MPG difference between summer blend and winter blend fuel. Towing my 20K GVWR trailer (summer blend...I don't usually camp when the weather gets cold), I'm usually in the 8.5 to 9.5 range and the trailer usually isn't over about 18, 500 lbs....give or take a few. I normally will tow in the 65-67 MPH range, with short bursts of passing going up to 70+ occasionally.`

Sounds about right. My 2020 F350 XLT Dually with 6.7 diesel and crew cab has a payload of 5436.

I'm getting 13.9 mpg so far on mine (only have 5500 miles on it). My 2017 F250 was only getting 13.3 mpg.

While towing or just driving normally? 13 seems really low for normal driving...

Pablo, you worry me a little when you seem concerned about mileage. If your question was only in passing then I'll feel better. If it was because of the effect on your family budget then you need to put all this on a back burner. RV'ing as a whole is a seriously expensive activity when entered into at your 423 Raptor level.
Xrated listed MPG's that are very similar to ours. We tow a total of 24,000 and found that weight towed and rear ratio have less to do with mileage than the speed you travel and the terrain over which you travel. In other words, don't expect a 3:55 to get better mileage than a 3:73. The difference won't buy you coffee.
Don't let any fools try to tell you your SRW is 'beast' enough to handle that 423. We are all here to tell you it isn't.
Good luck in your search.

No, I’m saying that based on the other numbers I have seen for towing vs empty on DRW driving on the current gen trucks, 13 seems really low if the truck was unloaded. The kind of low where either you are sitting in bumper to bumper traffic all the time or have a lead foot. 13 while towing on the other hand sounds really good, just wasn’t sure which.

As for budget, I would not be buying an F-350 Platinum + Raptor 423 if it weren’t within my financial means to do so. Budget is not an issue.

You'll be towing a little more weight than I am but I've noticed that towing weight isn't as big a factor once you get up above 10,000 - 12,000 pounds.. it's all about frontal area and all these full size 5th wheel have about the same frontal height and width..

My truck has averaged 13.2 MPG over the past 6 years; that's every mile and every gallon that the truck as traveled and every gallon that has been pumped into either tank.. hand calculated on an Excel spread sheet.. for 67648.60 miles.

Towing is 9 to 11.3 depending on wind, towing speed and hills... although I did see 12.6 over 300 miles with a 20-25 mph tail wind..

Running empty on highway is 16.5 to 18.6 again depending on wind, speed and hills.

Around town it pretty much 12-13 regardless

Yeah if you're obsessed with MPG this RV'ing might not be your thing. It's expensive even if you have a perfectly matched truck/5th.
