Well to start, not sure if they are printed any more but a "Motor Carriers Atlas" is a good start if you re old school. Are you looking for bridge heights and other low obstacles? To quote mutiple truckers that got their 80 ft 80K vehicle in a pickle, "The GPS told me to go this way"

+1 on the trucker's atlas

When I drove a rig, I had a TomTom GPS made for trucking but I still double checked with the atlas -- especially when I was in the northwest. I especially "liked" the time that the GPS tried to get me to go west on a two lane toward the 101 from I-5 that had a length restriction. Not to mention the atlas showing that there was also a length restriction north on the 101 too. I had to go farther north on I-5, cut over west on a different route, and then go south on the 101.

I find the Garmin gos do a great job. Ben using for over 20 years. Running a large screen Garmin Nuvi that takes us accurately where we need to be.

Both Waze And Google Maps have live traffic data. This alone can keep you from getting stuck in traffic.

Waze is probably the most accurate, there is an army of volunteer editors working the map everyday.

One drawback to Waze is it's a commuter app, so it will eventually take you and your rig into a tight corner.

Google Maps (owns Waze) is a much more refined navigator. It can tell you which lane to be in for an upcoming turn. It's started as a commuter app but seems to have some trucker features. Updates to the map are slower than Waze, but still far ahead of any other navigator.

This Wiki talks about truck mode with google maps.

If you are towing your rig in unfamiliar territory, then using trucker resources already mentioned in this thread may also be needed.

Here are more trucker resources, no particular order.

SmartTruckRoute
Trucker Path
DAT Trucker
Co Pilot
Sygic Truck GPS Nav

I have not used it, but it has an impressive list of features. RV specific features sound neat.

I have had several garmin units for marine nav, hunting and they have all been great.
