2016 Ram 2500 HD
Love this truck! We recently replaced a 2003 Chevy Avalanche 2500 with the 8.1 since we decided to go to a 5er. Dealer found it for us as we wanted one with the 6.4 Hemi, 4.10s and back up camera. Also had them install a sprayed in liner and custom dual exhaust. Just took our first trip with it and it is awesome! Love the sound of the exhaust (video link below). It hauls our 5er with ease! I think we made a good decision as Ford kept pushing our F150 heavy duty build back so we gave up and got the Ram. So far, pretty impressed!

Out of curiosity, what kind of mileage are you getting? What's the payload sticker say?
I've contemplated between a 2500 6.4l or Cummins for my next truck. The nice thing about the 6.4l is the higher payload.

Nice looking truck.... I love my 2014 6.4. I'd love it even more with the 4.10 gears like you have. I ended up with the 3.73s and am getting by okay. I tow a 10,500# 5th wheel and am just about maxed on payload when all loaded up. As someone mentioned, the extra payload w/o the heavy diesel engine is nice.
For MPG I see about 13/14 with a good amount of city stop and go. Highway can be as good as 20 on a flat road and keeping the speed down. Towing the 5th it's anywhere between 7-10 depending on terrain, wind and speed.
All in all I'm happy. For pulling, the diesel with my weight would be better but I tow fairly infrequently. The coil rear suspension and the relatively good MPGs for such a capable HD truck are hard to beat. Anyone even considering it I'd say go for it. This truck fills a great need for those who tow heavy but not super heavy. Anything up to and even a bit over 10K is no problem. Much north of 10K and/or a lot of hills and I'd go diesel.

I agree with what mtofell said I tow a little heavier than he does.
Mine is a 2015 Bighorn crew cab 4X4 with plow prep and tube steps. Payload on door is 2999 lbs. I considered a diesel but with the limited amount of towing I do I just didn't want to spend the 8 grand to upgrade.
Around here we only have rolling hill and the 6.4 does a good job for a gas motor, now if I lived in the mountains I most likely would have gone with a diesel for the extra pulling power. Over all I am very happy with my Ram 2500.

I have the 6.4 in my 2014 Ram 2500HD. My trailer weighs about 9500lbs. It does a good job of towing for a gas engine. I have the 3.73 and would have preferred the 4.10 but that is a scarce animal where I live.
The 6.4 does a very good job of towing my weight trailer and I've towed it from TX to FL 3 times, around TX and through the mountains of NM. I've not hit a place where it won't hold the speed limit (including 6-7% grades) and the most it's had to spin is 35-3800rpm. At 65 it turns about 2400rpm. It's a dream doing the TX to FL trip.
I've always said that above 10k lbs a diesel would be best and that still holds true. The 6.4 is a great engine and I highly recommend it but it has its limitations like all gas engines. Now, if they would just build the Hellcat engine and its 707hp for a truck that might be fun!!

Out of curiosity, what are the payloads of these 2500 trucks? I have an F250 that sits level. My friends have a Dodge 2500 and a Chevy 2500HD and they both sit real hit in back. Is there payload a lot more or is it just sitting higher? I haven't bothered to look at their stickers yet.

My payload is 3180. It sits a little high in the back, but I've never owned a pickup that didn't sit high in the back. It's also 4x4.

I know but that sure beats maybe 450lbs on the current gassers. A perfect step between existing gas engines and diesel. But, the cost for the engine is probably as great as that for a diesel (I haven't looked) in which case I'd opt for the diesel

In our area they have/had lots of upscale 2500s. I had to look hard to find one that didn't have the Laramie package and all the bells and whistles. Looks like you're in Austin. You might try Benny Boyd in Lampasas to see what they can get. They have a store in my area and did right by me.
I was online speccing one the other day and found that you can get a pretty nice "Tradesman" if you equip it right - it looks more like an SLT with options.

I don't plan on buying right now, just browsing around. When I do, I want to get at least the features that match my current Ram. It's a Lone Star, but I have a lot of higher options (Nav, Sunroof, Air Suspension, etc.).
