Yeah, but the 80MPH was only after putting duct tape over the 45MPH decals on the fenders of the UHaul <G>

Back in the 60's and the 70's there were a lot of crown vics pulling RV trailers. My son had 2 65 Buick Grand Sports in his yard and one of them had a 2" receiver under it. I wonder if properly set up what the tow specks is on something like that Crown Vic.

The oldest owner's manual I could find at Ford.com is for a 1996 Crown Victoria with the 4.6L engine and 4 speed transmission. According to that document, the USA models were limited to 2000 lbs with a class one hitch and there was no towing package available. Canadian vehicles could be ordered with a trailer towing package and class III hitch. Those vehicles were limited to 5,000 lbs.

"Back in the day" when BIG engines were used, I remember seeing Galaxie station wagons towing 25' or bigger trailers. The old Caprice wagon (and it's Buick/Oldsmobile/Pontiac counterparts) were right there too.

Of course, I also remember seeing F100 pick up trucks with big cabover campers "waddle" down the highway with 3 kids in the cabover bed watching out the big panoramic window while mom and dad sat in the cab enjoying the quiet with no kids behind them.... Oh those were the days............. LOL

Wow, interesting thread. Our first "RV" was a '72 Chevy C-10, 6 cyl. 3 spd manual carrying an old, plywood cab-over camper and pulling a Corvair dune buggy on a heavy, home-made trailer! Talk about a wreck looking for a place to happen!
Had a lot of fun with it though. Just proves that ignorance is bliss

Ahhh yes .... ignorance is bliss. Just thinking about my first RV gives me chills. Zipping up and down the hills of Shenandoah's Skyline drive in our '72 Datsun pick up with slide in wood framed truck camper. (well, we zipped down anyway and I added a dual wheel conversion kit which allowed me to make turns while going over 5mph ) Those were the "good old days" .... as opposed to the present "golden years". In my defense .. the truck had a manufacturers payload limit of 2200 lbs. and came with E rated tires and the original clutch lasted 179,000 miles. (You Tundra guys .. eat your hearts out. ) Oh ... I forgot to mention , it cost $2200US new. And of course .... The dealer said "No Problem".

"Back in the day"..... 73 Grand Torino pulling a 22' jet boat on a tandem axle slide on boat trailer with no winch. The Torino had open side pipes and the boat had a blown Olds 454. There was no misteak that some power was being used at the boat ramp when I trailered that boat and pulled it up the boat ramp with those Goodyear F 50 tires talking in the rear.
Everyone for a 1/2 mile knew when I came in

Oh Hank,

That is pretty funny !

I am sure at some point we did it all wrong also.

Thank goodness for wisdom in the 'older' years!

Now that I am 'older' as of this week, I feel I can say that.

Before I was the almost old whipper-snapper in the family.

My 'overloaded' days are over - it is easy cruising from now on!

Jo
