After having less than impressive longevity with two 12 volt batteries, I am thinking of pairing a couple six volt batteries. I have seen that a 6V battery is physically larger. Is it simply a matter of getting a new plastic protective bucket/container for the new batteries to be placed in? I understand the parallel v series and all that.

batteries mount on trailer front near the propane tanks

It’s all about amp hours. If you had a pair of 12V batteries connected in parallel, were the trailer leads on opposite batteries or just on one?

A pair of 6V batteries should give you more amp hours. You will need new boxes, and I would make sure there is room.

GC2 six volt batteries have the same "footprint" as a GP24 12 volt battery but are taller. The GC2's will fit in the same plastic battery box as a GP24, but the top the top will not go down far enough for the latches to catch to "close the top". Physically, if you have enough space for two GP24 batteries on your tongue then you have enough space for two GC2 batteries, provided you have the vertical space (an extra 2-3 inches) above the battery tray.

The LxWxH for the GP24 battery is: 10.2" x 6.6 x 8.2"

The LXWXH for the GC2 battery is: 10.24 x 7.09 x 10.79”

They will fit in the same LxW battery box, but the GC2 requires a "tall box" for the lid to close.

I just went with 2 GC batteries myself, this spring.
Yes, it is that simple. Bigger box needed since GC's are larger.

Two Crown CR-235's wired in series fit perfectly in this box:

Also added this battery monitor. If you don't have a monitor of some kind, I would recommend one.

Victron is supposed to have more features and bluetooth if you have deeper pockets.

I also did the upgrade this spring, went with the dual box, and am now the proverbial happy camper. There were, in my case, a couple of extra steps. With the new setup, my battery leads would no longer reach the now taller and more separate terminals on the batteries. I replaced them with nicer, slightly thicker leads. The tall box also made it a bit tighter of a run for my propane hose. I lived with that for a couple of weeks until my regulator crapped out (unrelated to the new box/batteries). I replaced the regulator and got a longer hose.

I switched from 2 x group 24 lead acid 12v batteries to 2 x group 27 LIFePO4 12v batteries... Now have 200amphr... Had to remove the handles between the two battery cases to get them to fit in the tray. Loving the 200amphr for boondocking. 2021 Cougar 26RBS trailer came with 175 watt solar on the roof.

Question.
Will 2 6v batteries have cranking power to start on board 5500 Genny?
