Space between tires?

What is considered a safe space between tires? 5th wheel came with 235/80/16 but the previous owner ran 235/85/16. There is a gap of 3.25" between the tires with the 85s. I'm thinking that I should go back to the 80s. Load will not be an issue. What say you

Tires would need to compress and expand a total of 3" (1.5 radius) on each side for that space to become an issue. Typically the more common issue is deck clearance.

If you're changing tires, go back to the 80s, if not, I'd leave it... Sailun makes a 236/80 tire that is great.

If it's time, I would go back to the 80s.

Yes, Cooper Discoverer Tires. Load capacity 3042....way under what I need!!

Been on the trailer for 18 months and driven less than 500 miles. One already has a bulging side wall. Definitely time to upgrade both the wheels and tires.

Dexter Axle says 1" minimum clearance between tires. See item #24 in the reference.

What Cooper says about replacement tire load capacity is a tire industry standard for all tires fitted in accordance with FMVSS (standards).

Excerpts from tire industry plus sizing SOPs.

Never exceed the maximum load capacity and/or inflation pressure listed on the sidewall of the tires.

Never exceed the maximum load capacity and/or inflation pressure of the rim/wheel.

Never utilize an unapproved wheel or one that does not meet the approved rim width range for the selected tire size.
