Hey, I'm wondering if anyone has converted or heard of anyone going from gasoline to LP Gas for a Onan 5.5 Genset

I have seen conversion kits for them but I have also heard that running an ac all night on it with propane uses about half of a 30 pound tank.

changing gas to diesel would require changing out the whole unit.

GM tried to "Convert" gas engines to diesel back in the 80's. Massive failure, gas engines can't deal with the compression required, etc etc etc

Ya, I know you can't convert gas to diesel. I had no clue anyone had even tried this. For what generators do diesel engines are MUCH, MUCH better. Running long hours at nearly constant RPMs . . . that is what diesel's do, and much more cheaply. If it had been a option when I bought my hauler I would have ordered a super quiet diesel unit and converted the extra LP storage to a diesel fuel tank.

As for LP . . . not sure why people want to do this. I did a quick search and there are threads out there on doing this. Lower smell (fumes)? I don't know but like someone else posted the generators eat LP tanks like crazy. I wouldn't do it for that reason alone.

Gas to fuel a generator is usually available almost anywhere. LP gas refill stations are not commonly located in all areas. Finding a place to refill propane tanks can make it much harder to operate an LP generator in many areas. But there's almost always a gas station to be found. I'd opt for a gas fueled genset over an LP system for RV use. Natural gas, however, in a home setting is usually a "never ending supply" and better suited for emergency (power outage) use.

Unhappy Gas Generators

Please Note, gas is the true rating for the generators that run on gas, if you change to propane you loose 30% power loss, so a 5500 watt gas generator running on propane is now only rates 3850 watts.
