We have made four trips in the last year between Colorado and Georgia and back. Our first day going and last day coming home puts in Tupelo MS area on Hwy 78 between Memphis TN and Birmingham AL. We have been staying at an RV park 9 miles West of Tupelo the last several trips and were ready for a change. We decided to try a Mississippi State Park since we have never stayed at one. After driving 14 hours the DW found us a park on the TLN directory just outside of Holly Springs MS, Wall Doxey State Park. It was located 5 miles West of Holly Springs and the drive was beautiful with tree lined highways and freshly cut grass.
As you pull into the park you are directed to the lodge which is a large rock building built many years earlier. The Park Manager Jeff Davis greated us and is quite a friendly chap. He said all his sights are backins and he chose one that had easy access. He said if it wasn't to our liking just pick another because there would not be anyone else coming in that had reservations. Camping is $18 a night and $13 for us older folks or disabled, I thought at that price it must be a dump "WRONG". As we entered the campground I couldn't belave my eyes. Friday night and only three other campers there. The sights where clean, all were paved and level, I mean level, and all had a table, BBQ pit and 30/50 amp hookups and water. The trees were thick and the lake was gorgous.
The next morning at 5:00 am while disconnecting a ranger truck came through and stop to clean the restrooms. While I was dumping at the dump station the ranger truck stopped by and it was the manager Jeff who was cleaning the restroom and bath house. He stated the he lives there and he feels that it reflects on him if the facilties are not up to standard. He grew up in the area and has worked his way up from the bottom to manager and takes pride in his park. He said it had gotten a bad name because former managers had let it run down and he has been working to restore it.
I would really recommend this park if your ever on Hwy 78 between I-40 at Memphis and I-20 to Birmingham. $13 dollars with hookups, you can't buy dinner for that!
