Vacation Ideas - RV parks

Good morning
I am looking for ideas from the community here, on where my family and I should travel to this June.

We are from the Omaha Ne area, and have been to Colorado, the black hills and Branson, loved those areas, but right now, its kind of been there, done that.

We are looking for something similar. I'd like to go to lake Itasca some year, but feel June would still be a little cold for us.

Some criteria that can help:

Travelling with two teen daughters
8-10 hours away max.
activities sim to black hills, keystone SD area and Branson
are not fans of water parks.
we have about 9 days for the total trip

Thanks all for the help!
Brian

Those places are a little to far, what about Memphis? about 10 hours, and i could split it up into two days.

Memphis has about "3 days of tourist stuff" to keep teenage girls occupied. After that, they'll be ready to go somewhere else....

First is Graceland and the Elvis museum. If you go, do the whole thing, Mansion, museum and transportation (cars and planes).

Bass Pro Shop (the "silver pyramid by the bridge")... Good for shopping, lots of big fish in huge aquariums and a pretty good place to eat lunch, but sort of pricey..

Beale Street/downtown. If it's hot or raining, forget downtown....

There are campground facilities with full hookups at the Tunica casinos. Last year we paid $18/day for a 50 amp, full hookup site at Hollywood Casino. NOTHING FOR TEENAGERS THERE !!!!! and it's about 25 miles to Horn Lake and another 10 or so to Memphis... It's on the east side of the Mississippi River, so no bridges to navigate daily.

Tom Sawyer RV Park is on the "river side of the levee"... If the river is up (flood stage) the park is closed. There's not much in West Memphis, AR for anyone, but for "isolated relaxation" Tom Sawyer is a nice place to sit in the shade and watch the tugboats push barges up the river.... You can get a campsite "30' from the banks of the river, so "right in the middle of all the wet".....

If it were me, I wouldn't consider Memphis in July with teenagers in tow....

Possibly Six Flags/Great America between Milwaukee and Chicago ??? Or the Mall of America complex in Minneapolis ???

Consider Door County, Wisconsin. From Omaha it's about 650 miles. Nice campground in Ellison Bay with full hookups. There's plenty of shopping and dining up and down the peninsula, and hiking in the state parks. All kinds of water sports and a ferry boat ride to Washington Island, and shipwreck museums. Don't miss out on the Fish Boil at the Old Post Office in Ephriam.

Memphis, unless you're an Elvis fan I'd stay clear. Our daughter lived just outside of Memphis in Atoka, and When we would visit and turn on the local news it was like watching the news from Chicago. Lots of congestion and crime. If you have never been to Wisconsin check it out there are a lot of nice places to see throughout the entire state. Your girls would like Wisconsin Dells even though it's the water park capital of the midwest there are plenty of amusement parks and sight seeing as well. If you liked Branson you'll like the Dells. The Dells are in the middle of the state and not quite as far as Door County. Where ever you decide to go have fun and stay safe.

Being from the Memphis area, I agree about August. Mall of America is a superb idea and lots to do in the Twin Cities.

I would recommend Wisc Dells over the Twin Cities/ MOA. I may be slightly prejudiced, but Minneapolis has turned into Murderapolis again, and that’s all we hear about on the news at night. The MOA? Meh. Too many stores have closed, the amusement park in the middle is expensive for what you get. Go over to the Wisconsin Dells. There are the water parks, the duck boats, amusement park areas. Just, more to do than in MN.

Brian, let me take back my previous recommendation and jump on the Wisconsin Dells idea. DW and I spend a few days in
'the Dells' every year, sometimes twice, coming and going north, and enjoy every minute.
We generally stay at Bonanza Camping Resort because of central location, but we don't go during peak times so I can't say how things would be on 4th of July week-end or the like. But the location couldn't be better.
And y'all can have lunch at Monk's Bar and Grill and buy all your Wisconsin Badger t-shirts to bring back to Nebraska!

Memphis in the summer doesn't sound good but a very notable place to visit while there is the MLK site. We went and it was very moving to see where he was killed and to be able to be in the spot where the shooter did his deed. However for a summer trip the Door county area is nice, Green Bay is close, the Dells are kind of on the way and it's hard to wrong along Lake Michigan.

Another vote for the Dells. I grew up in Wisconsin not far from the Twin Cities, then spent 25 years in the Air Force. WD is still one of my favorite spots. You could also take a slight detour and swing into St Louis for a couple days. The arch is definitely worth seeing from the top, they also have a nice 6 flags there for the girls. While in WD you definitely have to take the River boat tour. Absolutely amazing!

Thanks for the advice on this, I think we are heading east to the WD this summer, then possibly Door County.

Be adventurous, get out of your comfort zone, go beyond 8-10 hours.

How about Itasca State Park in Minnesota. You can do lake boat cruises, walk trails, and walk across the Mississippi River. Yes, this is the headwaters, starting place, of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca. Have fun splashing and playing in the water. Beautiful country, and nice campground.

While you are in Minnesota, there are other great parks to visit too.

Then drive South following the Mississippi River and land in New Orleans (If you have the time to do so.) You'll go through Hannibal, Missouri (the boyhood home of Samuel Clemmons --- Mark Twain), go on down to St. Louis, see the Arch, eat on the McDonald's Riverboat, There's a couple really nice KOA campgrounds in the St. Louis area. Visit the museum, 6 flags, all sorts of stuff to do.

Travel on South, visit Memphis, Tennessee. Work your way to Baton Rouge, and finally New Orleans. It will be the adventure of a life time.

Itasca is on the bucket list and the trip you describe sounds amazing, I will look into it. Is the 3rd week in June to cold to visit Itasca? I know my kids will want to swim.

Thanks

Water temp will still be pretty cold, but it always is. 3 week of June is hit and miss, could be in the 60/70s, could be 80/90s. We went back to the area last year about mid June. The week before and after were both in the 70s, the week we were home was high 80s.

You might like to google "Lake of the Ozarks for teenagers". There are lots of things to do. We have been going there for 20 years.

We are heading back to Ellison Bay in June for a week ourselves. Love the small mouth bass fishing up there on the Green Bay water side. We took our electric bikes with us and can ride from the park to Gills Rock or south to Sister Bay to visit the gift shops there.

The Dells is a great idea. On your way through Iowa, check out at least one of the Iowa Freedom Rocks. https://www.thefreedomrock.com/iowa-fr-tour/ There will be several along your route regardless of how you go. They provide a good opportunity to get out and stretch your legs for a few minutes without a significant delay to your trip. Very unique artwork

OK, we like factory tours so..
First stop in Elkhart IN and tour an RV factory of your choice.
We stayed at the KOA Elkhart and it was very nice.
Then on to Zanesville OH to see the "Y" bridge and Alan Cottrill's sculpture studio.
On the way home stop in Marceline, Missouri forthe Walt Disney Hometown Museum. Downtown Marceline is the model for Downtown Disney at the theme parks.
