Political Advertising

I do not know what others see on the side bar of the home page for the forums, but on my server I see an advertisement for some t-shirts with political slogans.
If I wrote some of these slogans on the forum I would be chastised and disciplined by the moderators.

Question: Why do I have to read political rhetoric in advertisements but can not write similar rebuttals on the forum?

If my comments are restricted to "RV related" only (and I have no problem with this, avoiding a Facebook like atmosphere is a good thing), then the ads should also reflect this "policy".

I could be wrong but I think it’s more to do with whatever device you in particular are using…the cookies and advertising metrics that are imbedded from your own search and viewing habits…maybe clear your history, clear your cookies and cache etc ….it’s like you tube..if I search for boats or airplanes or whatever, then my homepage will be filled with those suggestions…it may also go by your demographics..ie if your a certain age, income group etc

Agreed Jasin.
My complaint is more about "if I can't write it, why do I have to read it" in advertising.
I do appreciate this forum for it's information, the knowledge of it's participants and etiquette policies that avoid Facebook like confrontations. I get that.
I understand what you are saying and will admit in my adult life I have had to learn a host of new words associated with these machines in which we communicate. Algorithms, Ransomware, Bots? Not verbiage I used when I was standing around in the quad in high school that's for sure.
Showing my age I guess.
Thanks for the reply.

What you see on the sidebar is not a part of the forum. It is a part of the software interface with your browser (Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or other program). The forum has no influence over or input to those windows.

It's strictly a part of the program you're using on your computer, your browsing habits and your browsing history. When you open your browser program, that program "tailors your sidebar to your previous viewing history". If you have previously viewed political slogans, that's what you'll see. If you have previously viewed wheel bearings, that's what you'll see. If you have previously viewed weight loss products, that's what you'll see.

It's all "managed for and tailored to" your viewing history.....

Nothing in the forum software "selects the topics for your side windows".. It's all done within your browser. Some browsers have settings to reduce them and there are some "anti-spam programs" or "ad-reduction programs" that can eliminate most of the "pop-up windows" but for the most part, the ads on the sidebar create the revenue that makes the internet what it is... Just like the ads on "public TV" pay the costs of buying and operating the station, the ads on "internet forum viewing" pay the costs of buying and operating the "internet station"..... The "income" for the forum is INSIDE the forum windows, the "income for the "browser owner" is outside the forum windows.

Those political ads are "outside the forum influence"..... Maybe try an "ad blocking program" or a "different browser". Microsoft Edge is "raking in the money" with their SPAM on the side... Tapatalk is certainly not "free" even though you don't pay for it on a monthly basis.... They "make you pay" by taking up a part of your screen for "their advertisers use"... Same with almost every browser platform, no matter which device you might be using.

If you click on the "close button" (the X) at the top of most of those ads, they will close and you'll see a new smaller window. It will say something like, "Ad Choices by GOOGLE" or "Ads by GOOGLE" and a selection will pop up to "Stop seeing this ad" and a box for you to select why you don't want to see it any longer".... It's "their way of helping you reduce SPAM by tailoring it to what you don't consider SPAM".... Damned if you do and Damned if you don't......

Yes, you might want to clear your browsing history. I've had the same kinds of ads as well as all kinds of other little anomalies, some helpful, some not so much. But, I very rarely clear my browsing history because it helps move around various sites, pre fills etc. vs having to constantly re login, fill in all the boxes etc. It finally kept giving me so many pop ups I got irritated and decided to clear my history to see if it would help....all 20k+ items. Took a while but it dumped them and now, no little boxes, pop ups etc. Might give it a try to see if it helps.

Just install an ad blocker extension, available for FireFox, Chrome, Edge, IE, or ?, and be done with it.

I believe you can sign into google and turn off ads tailored to your browsing history. That is how you can keep from seeing all t hose political type ads; random stuff will eventually start appearing such as continual RV Life ads and clothing ads directed at folks 50 years younger than me hehehe. I use a Brave web browser to also cut down on tracking.

A lot of folks aren't aware of just how much "monitoring" of your surfing habits goes on. Most major cablt tv providers also monitor this information and while you and your neighbor may be watching the same channel you may be seeing ads gor seniors insurance while they are seeing new car ads. It's a very Orwelion world we live in.

If you're using an iPad or iPhone to view the forums, try this
Go into Settings: Safari: Advanced
Then turn off java scripts
Poof! Ads are gone, as is a LOT of other crap that comes with java.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to post anything with java off, but it's very easy to re enable when you want it.
Extra tip, Turning java off also skirts around some media paywalls..

Thanks for the help and tips. I clicked on a few selections in the Data Personalization boxes that looked like they might help eliminate some of the ads. We shall see.
Thanks again

I am seeing a Coca Cola Coffee ad now; what an abomination; not sure if is coffee that tastes like coke or coke that tastes like coffee.

I am now seeing pictures of Mercedes SUVs from some Mercedes dealer and a Cabenuva advert for HIV. Not likely to get either.

Down load "Brave" as your browser and stop using IE, Chrome, and Firefox.

Then use DuckDuckGo as your search engine, and quit using Google.

I think you'll have better results. I'll let DuckDuckGo speak for itself. Just check it out as a search engine... click here

The most disturbing thing is how your iPhone listens to you…I have every microphone permission turned off…every privacy option enabled and still if I talk with someone in my truck about an obscure reference…it will show up in my YouTube feed…I got rid of my Alexa ..I have a really nice 1 year old smart TV that I’m pretty sure listens to speech in the room and logs search history.
I think google is the one in my phone that even though it has no microphone permission is in fact monitoring random conversations ..because I can mention a band from the 60s in my truck and damn if it isn’t on my YouTube feed at home the next day…google owns YouTube …probably some vague permission buried in the legal mumbo jumbo when you download the app

What's crazy is, I warned about this very thing (computers and big brother listening to every word we say in the privacy of our homes, and hidden cameras in our smart televisions and even our i-Phones, and the dangers of Alexa.), and all I got was blasted how wrong I was, how none of this was true, and basically .... how stupid and paranoid I was.

Well, now you know! It's too late. The sheep were led right to the slaughter.

I use Brave browser up in my office shop along with DuckDuckGo as my search engine. One problem with Brave is that when I want to ship packages using Brave (I am also on a VPN), I have to switch to Firefox browser. When I try to log into several sites, I have to turn off the VPN. When I get a "check this box if you are human) thing, no Captcha will come up after checking the box with Brave. Google maps doesn't work with Brave. I still use it as I think that the owners of some of the tools we all use are a bit invasive.
