I wired mine before the transfer switch simply because I did not have concerns with the generator as a power source, and I could use the generator if the surge protector failed.

Many of us have Surge Guard surge protectors and EMS systems. I have also researched different protection systems

As far as trust in your generator, I started testing systems for the upcoming trip. Started up the ONAN 5500 and after a while wondered why I did not hear the microwave beep. NO 120 VAC then noticed an error on the surge guard monitor
HIGH VOLTAGE ---- L1 137 VAC The Surge Guard had disabled 120 VAC power to the RAPTOR. I shut down generator and opened it up, looked around and did not notice anything obvious. Restarted generator with no further power issues
. I will be looking into this further.
Without this protection the Raptor would have been powered with 137 VAC until something happened to catch my attention
So I am not sure how comfortable you should feel with your generator
And YES, I am happy with my Surge Guard.
