Going to be going to Austin Tx. in March. Need to stay around IH35 by downtown area. Will be traveling from south Florida. Looking for best route and nice campground. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't help you with the camping sites but if you are coming through Houston I highly suggest avoiding the downtown area, specifically the 290 area between I-610 and Beltway 8. Construction in that area and the lanes are very narrow with concrete barriers on each side. 290 goes to Austin so this area could be a mess. It's only a few miles, maybe around 6, that is affected. You can make it through there but it's narrow lanes and be careful. I can tell you I would not take my trailer through there, lots of wrecks with the narrow lanes and concrete barriers on each side. If you take Beltway 8 (toll road around city) watch out for some of the toll lanes which are narrow. There a some lanes a toy hauler will not fit through. I haven't had an issue in the toll tag lanes but I saw someone a couple of weeks ago that had evidently gotten off or something and tried to get back on the Beltway and could not get through the entrance lane and had traffic backed up. I felt bad for the guy because he was in a mess with nowhere to go and lots of traffic behind him.

I don't know of any that are near downtown.
We've stayed at both Oak Forest and Lone Star. Both were fine, but we much prefer Oak Forest for access to UT, which is just north of downtown. Traffic on MLK hasn't been too bad, whereas traffic on I-35 can be really bad.
Also, I don't recommend 290 from Houston to Austin. Instead, take I-10 West to Columbus, then take Hwy 71 to Austin. It's multi-lane all the way and we do it regularly towing our 38' Raptor. If you choose Oak Forest, don't take 71 all the way to I-35. Instead, turn north shortly before the airport (don't remember the road name) and head straight up to Oak Forest.

Agreed. Stay on I10 through Houston and take 71 At Columbus. There is only one RV park in Austin and it's on S I35. 71 runs into I35 so go south, go to the Slaughter exit, do a U-turn and come back up on the feeder. The park is called Lone Star something or other. I would call ahead for a reservation.

I-10 to Columbus x3.
And avoid Houston traffic during rush hour...6-9am and 4-7pm.
I-10 westbound is a killer in afternoons.

Austin
We are travelling from central Florida to Austin, TX leaving on 2/15. We are staying at Lone Star RV resort, which is managed by Carefree RV Resorts. I believe we are paying $24/night with military discount. I will subscribe to this thread and post what it is like when we get there.

I made it to Austin and am staying at the Austin Lone Star RV resort. It is a nice place, friendly staff, clean, some trees, well taken care of with pull through sites. Cable TV and wireless internet work well. Our site is towards the back away from I-35 so it is very quiet. I recommend this campground. Not certain as to availablilty as there is currently a no vacancy sign on. It is close to down town, maybe 6 miles but the traffic here in Austin is horrific.

Thanks

From Florida take I-10 to Houston, Hwy 290 to Austin
Consider I 610 around the north side of Houston and connect with 290 on NW side of the city
