New Turbo

Well my truck went into shop this am for engine light coming on when towing up hill, not every time but about every 2-3 trips, kept throwing P0234 code. She is getting a new turbo under warranty.
I do not have any programmer or mods done to this truck, first time not doing any mods. Went through simular issues with my Ford. Just cant seem to get away from turbo issues!! Both trucks threw codes towing 5ver, my 8x10 box trailer and my 8x16 flat bed trailer. Just turned 42K miles on truck.

Are you letting the turbo oil (via EGT) cool down before shutdowns or just shutting the engine down?

Yes, always have let it idle for approx 3-4 mins. I was use to cooling the EGT's on the Ford, I had the Insight touch screen on Ford so I new all perameters. I told myself I was doing no mods to this truck, the Duramax has been great, pulls like a champ so I didnt see messing with it.

Is there a break in period for this new turbo? I will be getting truck back the day before we leave for our trip.

I don't think there is much of a break-in for the turbo by itself. It either spins very fast right from new or doesn't and fails, which would be very abnormal. If you had the time, break-in just like you would break-in the new truck like in the manual wouldn't be a bad idea, and I think that is normally 500 miles, but that is normally getting engine parts, like rings and bearings, etc, broke in, and of course the brakes too. The 'bearings' in these turbos are really not bearings but a pocket of engine oil that the shafts spin on, and that is why it is a good idea, especially when you have been into the throttle pretty heavy and long, to let the engine idle for a few minutes before shutdown to prevent coking of the oil around the shaft, which really shortens a turbo's life.

You talk about cool down which is very important but just as important is warm up. let the engine idle for a bit. my routine is star the truck then set the climate control radio lights seat and buckle up then drive off. if you can help it,try not to get the turbo into boost untill the temp gauge starts to move. every car/ truck i own has a turbo. all over a hundred k on them all with the original turbo that includes the 1978 saab (1 turo saab in the us) i know it's a pita letting it warm up but it has worked for me! good luck. and the new turbo will need no breaking in

Update: Pulled cab off for turbo, replaced the exhaust part/tube/piece that connects to turbo and my CV boots and a tranny line that was leaking as well. All covered under warranty except exhaust part and tranny line. GM does not cover anything related to exhaust or tubes to tranny. Its BS but still talking to GM and dealer. Does this sound right to you SAABDOCTOR?

Yes on warming up in the am, I drive approx 25-30 mph for 1 mile till I get to main road... then its on!! lol

Just me, but I use synthetic Shell Rotella 5w-40. I don't know what Chevy specifies, but Ford manual says 5w-40 for towing, and 10w-30 for normal use. My local Ford dealer puts 10w-30 unless you tell them different. They don't even stock 5w-40. Why would I have a 1 ton truck if not for towing??
Lots of opinions on synthetic oil. But for heavy use I think it's worth it.

A lot of info out there about diesel oils. After a lot of research (and some bias) I decided on Mobil Delvac 15W-40. GM recommends 15W-40, but if you use a synthetic you will most likely have to go with a 5W-40. I do use Mobil 1 turbo diesel when temps drop to well below freezing for extended times (Dec-Feb). I'm sure the dealership is putting in a decent oil, but I don't like the indicators. I change my oil every 5k miles and the indicator usually says it's around 40-50%. I can only imagine how many miles you are running to get it down to 10%.

If you want to check for oil comparisons, Amsoil paid for an independent comparison and it can be found with a simple google search. It's an interesting read, you will probably be surprised with some of the results.

Wow hard to believe that is only at 10% at 4k. As I stated previously, I change every 5k (rotate the tires ate the same time), makes it easy to remember on the 5s and 10s on the odo, and I rarely drop below 40% oil life. I know the computer is designed to take driving conditions into account, maybe your oil life and turbo failure is all related to driving conditions. How do you typically use your truck? Always towing, a lot of hills, etc? That also leads me to wonder about the condition of your tranny fluid.

Typically sits in garage, I try and drive it at least 1 day a week to my office, sometimes twice. My office is 16 miles from home and all hwy, well I am 1.6 miles from freeway enterance and office is 1/4 mile off hwy. I use it mainly for towing the 5ver, 1-2 times a month. I am 65 miles from Bass Lake which makes for easy weekend trips.
It helps that I went to school with our local Chevy dealer owner, so maint is not an issue. My work trucks get the same treatment, all Duramax's as well. We can go back and forth but ALWAYS aroud the 4,200 miles, oil is on 10%

When I pick it up tomorrow, I will use it as my daily driver for awhile and see how that goes.

Was just talking to my brother about the percentage on oil change and you are correct, his percentage is around 30-40% when he takes his in at 5000 mile intervals and does tranny every 25K miles. He drives his every day and told me I should be too.

Man... I need to go see a chiropractor from driving my truck everyday!! My oil percentage is not dropping much so I will keep an eye on the mileage.

This one is definitely interesting to me. I used to drive mine almost daily, now down to 2-3 days per week. My oil life on the last change was still at 30% after 5,000 miles. Now I have a different truck, 3500 DRW, but same year as my last dmax. Will see if this one is any different.

Do any of the monitors like the EDGE CTS include a turbo timer?
