Water Heater Draining

I'm a newbie and this is my first time winterizing. I know I need to drain the water heater but not sure how. I have a 2014 Hideout. The water heater does not have a drain valve proper but does have a pressure valve. But it looks like if I pop the pressure valve it will run all over the other components and possibile back into the interior. I have read you can take the anode rod out as well. Whats the best way to drain this kind of unit?

First make sure the gas and electric switches are turned off for the water heater. To drain the water heater, remove the anode rod. It is the large hex head(1 1/16" if I remember correctly) on the bottom of the photo. After removing the anode, then stand back and open the pressure relief valve. After the water is completely drained replace the anode and close the relief valve.

If yours has a drain plug, it is usually located near the bottom of the WH. You may see a large looking nut.
That is the drain plug (1 1/6" in size) and that will drain the WH and expose the Anode rod. Good Luck.

Open a hot water faucet.

X3 .... But be sure to relieve pressure first or you will get very wet, very fast. The water will not get into the trailer or harm any of the components. Open inside hot and cold faucets and then Temp. & Press. valve to relieve pressure.

If the heater was being used before draining, water is hot.

from the looks of your photo, it's the black plug at bottom center. Like others said, make sure water heater is off, open an inside hot spigot, etc.

water heater

I usually weight to drain hot water tank after the drive home and putting things away. this usually allows time to cool down.

All of the TT I have had came with a low point water draing, on my Cougar it has two one for the hot and one for the cold water. They are located right under the water heater. Before you remove the annode open the low point water drain and open the relief valve, this will save you from getting wet ( I learned the hard way).

Once I remove the anode for the winter I leave it out until next spring.

I sent Keystone the question also and they said the same thing about leaving the anode out till Spring. Thanks for your guidance.

Is the any problem with replacing the anode rod in the WH so that it's ready to use in the spring? I thought that if I didn't reinstall it, the threads might rust over.

lz scout I put mine back in use fresh bit of teflon tape. I do it so some little critter will not move in. after it is winterized I blow out the heat with compressed air and secured the anode. never had a problem.
