rear platform for trailer
Hi All,
I have a 2011 HIdeout 26RLS and would like to add a rear platform to hold a generator. Has anyone added one and if so how did you do it ? I know that some units that cost more than ours have a slide out rear platfrom but ours doesn't so I'd like to add one if possible.
Thanks much
Desert Jack

Everytime I see a post like this the image of that rear bumper that someone put nothing more than a bike rack on pops into my mind. If you didn't see it do a search.

Ever watch the rear end of a TT bounce when going over RR tracks? IMO think about a front mount hitch on TV, and put it there.

If it’s *just* a generator, there may be room at the front end next to the battery. I have a single battery (for now) and the space next to it is large enough for my Yamaha EF2000iS.
If you’re looking to mount anything larger, you’ll need some serious welding to handle all that bouncing out back.

Not recommended. TT bumpers are rated at 200 lbs and the force of the bouncing generator could wreck the bumper and the generator.

just remember that thing on the back of your trailer is NOT a bumper. It is a sewer pipe holder/storage device! Unforetunetly, that's about all it's good for or rated to carry w/o reinforcement. They usually aren't even a square tube, they are often a folded up and seam welded piece of sheet metal!
I cut mine off, then welded on a 4.5" square x 3/16" thick square tube using full penetation welds on the attachment to the frame and reinforcing gussetts. Now I can carry bikes or my motorcycle.

thanks very much
Thanks to all who replied to my post. I really appreciate all the responses. The reason I asked about this is that I saw a trailer some yrs ago with a platform out back and a generator on it BUT maybe this is not a good way to go so into "file 13" it shall go !!

Don't attach it JUST to your bumper. You can weld the receiver to an extension and weld extension to the frame. I've seen it before and that's the way the dealer was going to attach one for me..... until he quoted me the cost. Anyway, that's my project for the summer allowing me to use the added platform for storage. Looks very similar to an aluminum "box" but it's actually a storage bin sitting across the back end of my camper. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Correct! There is nothing wrong with putting a platform on the back but you have to have it done properly. As is discussed above, most TT bumpers are nothing more than sheet metal bent to form a cover of the frames. If you decide to go the rear platform mount route, thats fine, just have someone that has structural welding experience do it and make sure it is welded to the main frame I beams. Overkill is neccessary with the stress bouncing will place on the receiver. It can be done, but do it right or you will be out a genny and maybe cause damage to the TT and who ever is following you when it lets go.

I had a 2 in reciever welded to the frame of my camper so I could use a tool box mounted to a hitch haul and it has worked very well.

Even if done properly you will need to pay attention to the handling of your tow vehicle and trailer and make adjustments as necessary. A coworker made this mod using heavy steel tubing and a hitch receiver and had it welded to the trailer i-beams. He also made up a cage to hold the generator using heavy steel angle and tubing that would slip into the hitch receiver. The mod was definitely done right but total weight with generator was around 250 pounds. With the generator hanging off the rear of the trailer, a percentage of the 250 lbs gets subtracted from the hitch weight and has a larger affect when traveling at speed over bumps in the road.
The first couple of trips with the generator he complained about some trailer sway and tried making adjustments to his hitch setup to compensate. He had never experienced sway on any previous long distance trips. In conjunction with a job transfer, the family decided to take a vacation and make a long drive to the new job location. A day away from their new home, the driver lost control of the rig while crossing a bridge and being passed by a big rig. The tow vehicle didn’t roll so no one was seriously hurt but the only thing left on the trailer platform was the toilet and the tow vehicle was totaled.
Any weight that is hung off the back of a trailer can have a significant effect on the handling of your rig and you will need to compensate for that.

I've seen where owners have added steel coming back from the frame and built a
platefore for the generator on back, having nothing to do with the rear bumper
or sewer hose holder (mine does not even fit inside, fittings too big).
