Batteries
I have a 2016 PassPort with 1 12v battery I need to replace, it's the original battery and isn't working properly. We do not boon dock very much but am considering going to 2 12v batteries size 27 instead of replacing the sixe 24 12v that is on now. The bigger size would give me more reserve amps without going to 6v batteries which would cost more. Looking at Interstate deep cycle batteries. Also would the maintenance free be better than the regular?

If you boondock any at all then 2 series 27 12v batteries would be good... Not as good as 2 6v but better than one battery..
I'd suggest looking at Walmart for your batteries... Good warranty and you can get it done in nearly every little town...
I will probably never boondock but I do use a series 27 Walmart deep cycle... just make sure you buy the DEEP CYCLE and not the Deep cycle / Cranking battery

I have a 2018 passport 2520 RL when I added additional battery I had use a saws-all and cut the side angle irons off . Then I was able to mount 2 group 27 battery boxes .
I would make sure you get group 27 boxes. Walmart’s in their store stock an adjustable battery box that works for a 24,27 or 31 battery they are way to big unless you are using group 31 battery’s .
Just my thoughts

I couldn't get 2 - 27 batteries installed due to the boxes. I took them back and got 2 - 6v batteries (fit in 24 boxes). About the same cost, but a lot more power. Costco has awesome prices on the GC 6V batteries.

If you have a “Batteries Plus” near you, they have Duracell 6v golf cart batteries for $99 each. They are 215 amp hours I believe.

So 2 6v batteries are better than 2 12v batteries?

With 2 -12v batteries you get around 180ah. With 2 - 6v batteries you will get 210+ah. Also, most 12v batteries are not true deep cycle. The golf cart (6v) batteries are true deep cycle.

I had 2 X group 24 interstate deep cycle batteries and they were rated at 75AH each, the Duracell GC2 I replaced them with are rated at 230AH, so I went from 150AH to 230, much happier, I could not run the furnace through the night with the G24s, unless I set the thermostat to 40 or 50.
This season I have a 100 watt solar panel to add to the mix.

I would suggest measuring the space for the batteries available on your Passport. Even if you have to buy new boxes you will be better off with 2 batteries if they will fit. A 6v system requires two batteries to get to 12v. Either way you are now able to expand your RV experience to include those places (like Forest Service and National Park campgrounds) that don't offer full hook-ups. We find ourselves dry camping and boondocking a lot. I think it puts us closer to the action. Once you're ready give it a try

Just got on the forum to look into battery options. Not trying to hijack the thread, but I was about to buy a second group 24 battery to add to my Cougar because we dry camp often and my single battery doesnt last very long. Is the popular option to get two 6v golf batteries instead of two 12v deep cycle batteries? If so, why?

Yes, it was mentioned earlier. The total capacity of 2 - 6v batteries is better than 2 - 12v. In addition, they are true deep cycle.
In your case, you would want to buy 2 new batteries. If you have a Costco, you can get 6v GC2 batteries for around $80 a piece.
