Hot water problem

I was using my hot water last Sunday night cleaning off dishes, turned it off for a second to grab another dish went back to turn the hot water on and nothing came out at all. After that none of the hot water valves had water. I did bypass the hot water tank and cold water would come out of the hot side. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be. I am going to flush the hot water tank this weekend and replace the anod rod.
thanks for any input.

There is a check valve on the outlet of the water heater .... it is most likely clogged with debris or it has failed. Hope this helps, Hank

Hank's got this one right. Most likely the check valve.

I replaced the check valve with a pipe nipple and installed a three-way instead of the "T".
