Curious about tow vehicle

My wife and I recently bought a Passport Elite 31RE on seasonal close-out, but as it was so late in the season, we had the dealer winterize it and store it till we pick it up next spring. Thus, I have not towed our trailer yet. I'm planning to pull it with a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 rated to tow 7,000 lbs. Given the dry weight of the trailer is 6,300, I am hoping that with judicious packing and no water on board, we should be okay to tow with the Silverado, but I am a little nervous. I am curious what you are using for the tow vehicle. Was your first summer with the 31RE a good one?

Silverado rated for 7000? Usually it carries higher number. I assume you have a very basic version. What is the engine, transmission, rear end, payload, wheelbase, type of towing hitch/ package, transmission cooler? You will be definitely over this rating by 300-500lb, i am telling you this as a very judicious packer. Before all the weight police came loose on you I have to mention that going over Towing Capacity, while is not nice, is not a crime either. I will not predict that your towing experience will be horrible just because of this fact. The state laws require that you will not exceed GVWR of either truck or trailer, should have safety chains, working trailer brakes and right mirrors. And them right setup comes, but this will be another story.

I'd be a little more than just nervous. You have only 700 pounds to load--include the hitch, filled propane tanks, battery, water, people in the truck, stuff in the truck bed, stuff in the trailer and you are going to be way over weight. You may also be well over tongue weight on your hitch.

I'm not the weight police and generally think "they" get over zealous but I do think you are flirting with being severely overload. I hope you have a good equalizer/anti sway hitch. Guess you'll see how it tows...

The old saying, tail wagging the dog? The longer the TT the more the tow truck needs weight, have not seen specific facts on what is a safe balance but with your TT and truck looking into the weights involved is important as well as trailer length.

I'm no expert, but I can tell you that the weight sticker is not very accurate. My sticker has a weight somewhere in the 6,000lb but after taking my truck and camper to the CAT scale the trailer came out weighing in at over 8,000lbs.

Wow, that's a heck of a difference from what the sticker has posted. I`ll be doing the same with mine TT as soon as I get a free weekend. I`m curious as to how close my weight is compared to what's posted. Of course when I weight it. I will have all my usual stuff in the rig as though I am going camping.

My real weight was totally consistent with yellow sticker plus approximate weight of stuff and water we put in. Definitely, no surprises here. I believe, 4960 plus another 800 lb or so. Later we put more stuff in, however.

A 3/4 ton will serve you better with that trailer.

You could probably get away with the setup that you have, but I would be very nervous. I like to be prepared for the worst, moving down the road at the posted speed limit on a clear good road is a dream, but that one time when a distracted or unaware driver cuts you off and you have to make an emergency stop the brakes in the tow vehicle may not be adequate. People that do not tow TT's or 5ers do not understand the stopping distance of our rigs.

Curious to know how your truck did last year towing your 31RE? I have one too that I tow with a Dodge Ram 1500 quadcab. I've never weighed my trailer.
