Military Campgrounds
For all you Active and Retired Military...there are some really nice campgrounds all over the country. More and more Posts and Bases are building and maintaining some really top notch campgrounds...some are full hook ups, some elec, etc. They also offer security and being close to PX, BX and commissaries. We have stayed in several, usually much cheaper than a civilian campground. All you need is your ID card. There is a really good web site offering articles about these campgrounds, new ones being built, and activities throughout the year. It is free, but to get the complete listing there is a download available. www.militarycampgrounds.us Worth a look and you'd be surprised at how many there are. We have met some real nice folks from all branches too.

We stay at famcamps quite often and really like most of them. Ft McCoy in WI has a great famcamp, but we stayed at the wrong time. They were doing night training, so artillery started about 0200 every night we were there. That's one thing that is good to check on before going. Being AF, I can sleep right through a jet taking off....actually kind of soothing for me, but the artillery was a different story. One of my favorite famcamps is Offutt AFB in NE. F.E. Warren in Cheyenne, WY is very nice, just not much there for small kids.
Thanks for the link!

Fort Story in Virginia Beach Va. is a nice one. A little small but on the ocean.

We stay at military campgrounds whenever possible. Cherry Point MCAS in NC, Charleston SC AFB, Scott AFB in IL, Camp Carlson near Ft Knox in KY, Fort Huchacha in AZ, Seal Beach Weapons Station in LA, Round Pond at West Point in NY, Newport Navy Base in RI, Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson are favorites. Most do not have cable but usually can get at least few stations over the air. Most either do not allow weapons on base or require them to be deposited in the armory. Some have no sewer and Carlson has NO cell service at all and the internet is spotty. Rates are good; rarely over $20.00 and less for long term. Security is good although if not all in your party have military ID, can be a hassle coming and going. Most require you to get a pass and at Charleston, your entire rig goes through a metal detector. Most sites are much larger than private campgrounds and better kept. Also the people you meet are great. We always choose a military campground if one is available.

I notice they also allow 100% disabled vets to use them but how many really camp at all. Why not let any disabled vet use them?

Bluewater,
That question is one that should be taken up with the DOD and the individual services at either the command or DOD level. It's not within the realm of the installation commander or the services section at the installation to change the regulations as written by command. While the program is a great benefit for retired military members and some discharged veterans and even select DOD civilian employees, it is not primarily for the use of "vacationing retirees" but rather was designated at its inception as an augmentation for base housing/transient housing. The primary purpose is to provide a place for active duty families to stay during PCS moves either into or away from one assignment to another. Providing the campsite is cheaper than building transient lodging (motel rooms) for those who have an RV.
Any other use, be it by retirees, active duty on leave or disabled veterans is on a space available basis. Active duty PCS in/out have priority for spaces, other use is not the primary purpose.

The link provided in post #1 of this thread is a must read for those interested in parking your RV on a military or military owned installation.
Military campgrounds come under the management of the individual base Moral Welfare & Recreational departments (MWR). Each may have their own rules and regulations determined by the individual installation commander.
The USAF uses the acronym FAMCAMP to describe their campgrounds. The other services will use RV Park or Campground.
We have stayed at them all around the country. Just like civilian campgrounds there are the good, bad & ugly. We have found the best amenities at Fort Bliss, TX.
Here is a link to some we have stayed at. It’s a short list and we have stayed at more than a dozen others. Sometimes we put them in our travel plans and make reservations (if accepted). Other times we may just use them as an overnight stop-over.

Thanks for the info. We have never stayed at any of the places you mentioned. In our travels just the last two years, there have been only two military campgrounds we probably would not return to; Tinker in OK City is OK but really small and tight. Kirkland in Albq. is old and pretty run down the last time we were there. Otherwise, the ones I mentioned earlier are outstanding and uniformly better than the commercial campgrounds we have used.
