Avalanche

Anyone ever pulled with a 2007+ Avalanche? Older would be good to hear about but I think the capacity is lower.

Stublejumper,

I'm pretty sure they're talking about the Chevy Avalanche pickup.

We had a 2007 Avalanche. I liked it. Had the 3.73 rear axle. Pulled my boat good. My son has the same year Z71. We compared transmission temps one hot Houston day. He was a good bit cooler. He had a factory transmission cooler, I didn't. I took the Avalanche to the dealer and had them install a factory cooler. Helped a lot. I did have an electronic issue with the heater. Dealer re-programmed and cured it. Only that one problem.
The Avalanche could eat up some road.

Gearhead, what did you pull with it? I have an 07 as well and am trying to figure out its real world capacity. I have a trans cooler from the factory but no temp gauge. 3.73 as well. GM says 7200lbs but in another thread they think I'm crazy for attempting to pull a 6000lb TT. They may well be right, I'd just love to hear first hand experience.

Apologies Stublejumper for the ambiguity with the Avalanche RV. I didn't know there was such a thing at the time of posting! Very new to this!

* other than your boat. Or, how heavy was the boat?

In the "other thread", it was suggested that its "real world capacity" could partially be determined by taking the Avalanche (loaded with your family, your dogs and other camping supplies that you would normally take with you) to a weigh scale to determine its measured and accurate weight.

Just wondering if you have followed up with that recommendation??

I may have misunderstood his post, but it appears that gearhead's "first hand experience" towing with an Avalanche is with a boat, not a TT.

The recommendation to have my vehicle weighed is a good one. No, I have not been able to stage a mock camping trip, load the vehicle accordingly and drive to find a scale that I can weigh my truck. (That would not make me a popular Dad or Husband) Perhaps there are more of those readily available in Canada but here the closest I know of would be at least a two hour drive.

Again though, I'm looking for someone that HAS a Chevy Avalanche (with 3.73 and 5.3L with a towing package and trans cooler like I have) or, less ideally, a 1500 series truck that they've used to tow a trailer with and what kind of performance they got. IE- "It towed it, but it was a dog." "I towed 8000lbs up hill both ways to work and it did just fine." "I towed 3000lbs and it seemed to struggle."

So far, Gearhead seems to be the only one with that first hand experience. And I understand that boats have different aerodynamic characteristics that make them less susceptible to adverse wind effects but if he's towing a 6000lb boat/trailer combo, that's some really good insight. But thanks again for yours!

!
There are 3 truck stops (Cat and Pilot) both of which have weigh scales within a 25 miles radius of where you live in S.C. To locate them and find more in your area, just Google "weigh scales in South Carolina" and you'll find quite a few that are much closer than a "two hour drive".

I'm not sure why weighing your Avalanche would make you an "unpopular Dad or Husband".
