The Eastern US pounded!

Just received a service alert from FedEx (I think global warming is gone for the winter?):

A HUGE winter storm dropped a foot or more of snow in several northern states, after slamming the Southeast over the weekend.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled, and tens of thousands of northeastern residents lost power.

The northeast corner of Ohio recorded 25 inches of snow, and forecasters in Buffalo, New York, recorded 18 inches by 1pm Monday.

The southeast was hit hard by the storm over the weekend, with nearly 200,000 power outages reported.

The storm, named Izzy by The Weather Channel, has poured down on the East Coast with intense ice, snow, wind, and rain.

As of Sunday night, 260,000 power outages were reported, 3,000 flights were canceled, and five states declared emergency.

The storm should end after its stint in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, which has gone into Monday.

Heavy snow is forecast in the Northeast region with up to 18 inches by late Monday.

I have often wondered if the people at these airports have never expected heavy snow? You freaking live and work in the north and a foot of snow is a big deal? Just who is in charge of snow removal at the Buffalo airport? This person needs to do a video on how REAL snow removal is handled and all the airport maintenance supervisors in snow cities should be forced to see how it is done. LHM, how can 6 inches of snow cancel flights in New York state ANYWHERE? I understand how this happens in Texas. But the east coast? Give me a break!

Six inches of snow in Texas is an extinction event... well anyway down in my part of the state. The folks in the panhandle are tougher folks and are used to arctic living.

In Louisiana, the Rapides Parish (same as a county in other states) entire parish snow removal equipment inventory is a 4x2 pickup with 2 trash cans of sand, 2 shovels and the 2 youngest inmates at the parish jail to ride in the truck bed, throwing shovelfuls of sand onto the road as needed. The Alexandria airport uses the UTV with a rotary broom (normally used to sweep the parking lots) to brush snow off the active runway.

That's the entire list of snow removal equipment. Get an ice storm or an inch of snow and the parish shuts down until noon when the sun melts the snow. If the sun doesn't come out by noon, the parish goes into "meltdown" and panic sets in......

Now, up here, well, 24" of snow is a common ocurrence and by 8 or 9 AM, the roads are clear and school busses are running normally, although school starts an hour later than scheduled.

Having lived in both climates, not having any snow removal equipment means not having any snow. At least no planned snow....

Pretty sure they activated the warning system to justify how much money they spent creating it....

No matter how low you set your expectations for a functional government, it's not met.

John, thanks for a good laugh this morning.
I have no idea what Rapides Parish actually has for snow removal, but there's the possibility you're overstating it.

Maybe they could upgrade to something like this

When they built the elevated portion of I-49 over the "middle of Alexandria's downtown area" they created their "Oh S**T moment" the first winter the interstate was open. It runs along the Red River and the moisture ALWAYS collects on the cooler elevated roadway. So, as soon as the temperature drops below freezing, the elevated part of I-49 becomes a sheet of ice. Add a half inch of snow on top of the ice and NOBODY is moving anywhere..... So, the Sherriff volunteered the inmates if the road department could find some sand... That became the "standard for snow removal" and it's not progressed since 1995.....

Around here, winter snowstorms = huge tourist revenues. Big storms bring in more folks to ski the "Greatest Snow on Earth". Other areas of the country see winter storms as a problem while places like Salt Lake , Denver etc look forward to and plan for dealing with the much anticipated winter weather and the added tourist boom.
Without the tourist revenues to offset the added cost of snow removal and other airport operations weather related expenses we'd probably be in the same boat as Buffalo.

It's the same around here. Gaylord is the "central point" for snowmobile trails in northern Michigan. I'd guess (can't prove it) that more money is spent on maintaining snowmobile trails than on highway maintenance in any given year.

In a town of less than 5000 people, investors have built 5 major hotel/motel establishments in the past 3 years. There are two more slated to be built in the next year.... So, "somebody, somewhere sees a future filled with more people staying/playing in the Gaylord area. Unfortunately, there's no commercial air service to the local airport. The closest is Traverse City or Pellston, both about 50 miles away. Otherwise, I'd suspect we'd have 5 times that many hotels being built..... We're an area with "no industry" so it's all about "the service/recreation businesses"....

It's because of the speed in which it fell .... it wasn't just 6 inches of snow, the areas that got 2 feet was 6 inches every hour almost. The challenge is finding a place to put it, and then as soon as you remove it, you have to start all over again. Where I am in Toronto suburbia, when I finished my driveway and then looked back at the front porch, it was like it was never even shoveled. Crazy fun!

Idiot kids on the end of my cul-de-sac trying to get their Integra up the street - Hitting the rev limiter for 20 minutes and gaining an inch at a time through 1.5 feet of UN-plowed mess. It was a site to see.

Here in the Rochester NY area we got between 12 and 18" of snow depending on who you asked.
It did slow traffic down a bit.
Biggest Subaru dealer in the US is in Rochester and even pre-Covid if you were looking for a 2 WD pickup you would have to special order.
To be fair the major reason the Rochester airport closed was because planes coming in from somewhere else couldn't leave where they were.

This was out my back window around 9:00 AM Monday morning.

Valid from: 01/20/22, 6:00 AM CST
Valid unitl: 01/21/22, 6:00 AM CST

Only 1-3 inches predicted for Eastern, PA. Kind of a disappointment, if I'm going to clear a 300-foot driveway, I'd prefer 6-inches or more to make the effort worthwhile.

Every winter around here there's an outbreak of epidemic proportions of Chionophobia . Defined as "an intense fear of snow, is a type of phobia categorized as an environmental phobia. Environmental phobias include other weather-related phobias like the fear of thunderstorms (astraphobia) and the fear of wind (ancraophobia)."

Now why this phobia drives people to buy mass quantaties of bread, milk, and toilet paper as far as I know has never been investigared. For years the 4 television stations in Baltimore would pre-emt all programming and hold an all day "snow show". There would be one poor SOB who's job was to read the list of school delays and closings. That would take a good 30 minutes to go thru the list of every school, daycare, state and federal offices etc. DW and I still think of the "snow show" when they predict winter precipitation.
