Tow vehicle Auxiliary Fuel

I was thinking about adding a fuel tank/toolbox combo to the F350. The one that is sold where I am buying my fifth wheel gravity drips into directly the fuel tank. My original intention was to buy one with a hose so I could fill my tractor until I looked into my friends truck and saw what a mess the diesel made from dripping out of is hose nozzle over the years.

The salesman told me they do have some issues with the trucks fuel tank not able to hold the pressure so fuel will come out the vent hose, he said especially on some of the fords.

Does anyone have any experience with this type aux fuel tank? Is the extra fuel even worth the expense especially if it leaks out your vent hose?

I have a 63 gallon gravity feed tank on my F350 and nothing leaks out my vent line.
I will point out that I don't leave the tank on if the motor is not running.

Is it worth it, damned straight, best thing since sliced bread.
Thirty-five gallon don't get you far pulling 15k +, always had to stop for fuel before I got where I wanted to be...

I put a motorized valve in the line to my fuel tank. Fuel doesn't flow until I turn the valve on. Flow stops when I turn the valve off, or turn the truck off. Worth every penny I spent and the time to install it.

FWIW......Had a 2017 350 with a Titan in bed tank towing my 5er, not bad, hardly used the extra fuel really and added weight and less bed space. Now have a 2020 F250, still pulling a 5er, going with two 5 gal fuel jugs for any emergency fuel needs, less weight, LESS EXPENSESIVE.

I use a 45 gal RDS transfer tank without any problems. When I leave on trips, I've got 70 gals onboard, i crack open the manual valve and allow the fuel to drain into the truck tank while I'm driving. I've installed a inline valve which has a checked valve, stopping any overflow. Fyi my tank was purchased from NORTHERN TOOL and Supply RDS 45 gl part# 349007 and the conversion kit id #43748.

I’ve installed a number of gravity feed tanks, always with a 1/4 inch back flow preventer in the end of the vent line. Never any trouble with any tank, period. We travel with 96 total gallon capacity and we like it. RDS also, good tank. It stays on all the time with the valve open.

Our 2020 F-350 holds 48 gallons so it's not a problem. I can drive from Abilene to Albuquerque and not stop for fuel LOL. There's a joke there about a 48 gallon bladder somewhere but I'll let that go. At any rate, if we're rolling there is at least 10 and usually 20 gallons of spare fuel in the bed for the generator. Cheap and easy reserve. Note - that's all gas, I'm not a diesel owner.

My truck has a 36 gallon tank, and I seemed to always be a little short of fuel to get to the next big town that had decent fuel prices, (if you can find that at all any more). I found a 20 gallon RDS gravity feed tank at northern tool. It fits under my bed cover, and doesn't use up all of my space at the front of the bed. It gives me a 500 mile range, which is enough for me each day.

LOL. I pass 3 in the 20 miles to work. 2.89, +.40 for diesel, 2.99 + .30 for diesel, 2.99 + .20 for diesel. The QT is the weirdest - last 10 days 2.89 or 2.99. Morning 2.89, afternoon 2.99. Next day it's flipped. One day it was 2.89 morning, 3.09 afternoon, 2.99 next morning. The Iron Horse travel center close to home has been 2.99 for the last 3 weeks. Maybe they forgot how to program the pumps LOL.

Had 2 GMC diesel duallies that we full-timed for 10+ years. The '05 had 32 gallon tank, the '13 a 36 gallon both of which was enough for our daily travel limit, no need for the aux tank. Once I retired I had no reason nor desire to do the marathon travel thing ever again. We would travel about 6 hours &/or about 300 miles & then stay a minimum of 2 days, unhook & find cheaper fuel stops off the highway in town with truck solo. If needed there were always truck stops nearby to easily fuel up in the truck lanes. Never in that 10 years did we have a "OH S##T" moment wondering if we could make it to the next station.

Around 20 some years ago we left home in MD and headed to Colorado Springs. Drove out on northern route and back southern route. No offense to the great state of Kansas but driving thru once was enough for us. Anyways, no camper, I had enough hotel points gor 2 weeks+ and 2 weeks was my time of work.

Was driving my DW's Durando R/T, 5.9 L "magnum", big tires, all wheel drive, required premium fuel and used LOTS of it. We stopped somewhere I think in Wyoming (we were just exploring the country as we went) and fueled up. Plugged in the gps, entrred our destination (a stop in Denver to visit her nephew in college) and the gps said "258 miles to the next gas station". That was an Oh ****e moment. I typically drove that thing like I stole it because it was fun but that drive was like driving on ice.

We arrived in some mall town (258 miles away) and filled up at the one and only station. And yes, they knew the cost of that commodity.....

I put an RDS 60 gallon "L" shaped tank in my truck earlier this year, gravity fed. I also have a FillRite 15gallon/minute pump in the tank because I already had the pump from my previous tank....so I just put it in and wired it up. When we leave the house, I've got right at 95 gallons of fuel onboard and last month, we went out west to visit some of the National Parks in AZ and UT. One of our travel days was 480 miles and we never stopped for fuel until we got to the campground and had the trailer setup. Once setup was done, and dinner was had, I'd go fill up the aux. tank and if it had run dry and was using fuel out of the truck tank, I'd fill that too. It is totally worth it to me to not have to find a truck plaza to refuel and looking at the fuel gauge while you have 400 miles under your belt and the gauge still reads full..........Priceless....at least until you pull out the credit card to replace all the fuel that you burned for the day!

Added the RDS 51 Aux / tool box to our with a gravity feed. With 36 gal. stock and about 45 max in the tank, comes to about 81 or 70 gals. usable before I need to look around for more. No issues with leaking but running GM not Ford. It has been nice to be able to run longer only fill up at most once day.

Any concerns about the additional 7 pound per gallon weight added to your tow vehicle? I only ask because it seems a lot of newer forum people are already over what that weight should be.

On my 4th F350 with an aux tank and never a problem with gravity feed. 48 gallon truck tank and 50 gallon aux. love the truck stops for fast fill plus def and TSD discount card when pulling 15.5k at 41’ plus longbed dually.

That is a very good question thank you for asking. My dry pin weight is just under 2100lbs dry. I bumped up to an f350, I was just informed yesterday it was buoy and awaiting shipping. So I really don’t know the actual payload until I pick up from the dealership. I believe I will be on the safe side with extra 500lbs give or take, but really not positive yet

My SD came with a 27 gallon tank so, towing at 9 MPG made for constant planning for fuel stops.

This September I put in a 60 gallon replacement tank from Titan. The Dealer installed it as I am paranoid about voiding my extended warranty. �� (I could just imagine the injector pump failing and the dealer saying the new tank was to blame)

2012 F250 Diesel Short Bed 27gal OEM tank. After our first long trip pulling the fiver, and chasing fuel every 150 miles, I put a Titan 50 gal OEM replacement tank in and a 40 gal RDS in-bed tool box fuel tank with gravity feed to the Titan tank. And yes I did have a problem with the leak out of Titan tank vent. Solution was to put a hose on the vent and run it up through the bed into the filler station of the RDS tank and secure it with a zip tie. With 90 gal of fuel, I can easily go 700 miles before having to refuel.
