What oil to use in my Duramax?

I just ordered a new 2014 Duramax and was wondering what oil u guys that are towing heavy loads are using? I know it comes with 2/24000 maintenance, but don't really want to use the factory oil. I guess I don't even know what they use anybody know? Thanks for the help!

Mike L123 -

Instead of your unnecessary and impolite, negative remarks about the original poster, why not simply recommend to him that he follow the recommendations for oil use suggested in the Owner's Manual? Please note that I removed your description - "effen" manual from your post.

Why do you not want to use the factory oil?

At the price of a diesel oil change, I'd be more than tempted to abandon my "allegience" to Shell Rotella. If you look at the cost per oil change, if someone (the dealership/factory) is going to provide "free maintenance" (face it you've paid dearly for the next 4 oil changes), don't you think it's quite a waste not to use what you've paid for?

And, if there's a way to transfer those "free oil changes" to another person, I'd volunteer to take them off your hands, even if GM would be doing the maintenance on my Ford.

That's the "long version"

SHORT VERSION: If the dealership is using the factory recommended products, you'll be fine. Don't lose those hard earned dollars by going somewhere else.

I would use the dealer "free" oil changes while you can. If anything goes wrong with the engine, then the dealer cannot use the oil issue against you. Just my .02 worth.

Great news on the new truck post some pics when you get it.
I have a dodge and we run the Shell Rotella have been for over 10 years.
I use it in every thing here from our tractor to dirt bikes.

Also use good oil filters. I run Fleet Guard filters I buy like 6 oil and 3 fuel at a time.

The cheap Walmart oil, dutifully replaced every 3000 miles along with a good filter.

I am a firm believer in synthetic oil, not sure if oil used at dealer is or isn't I will take advantage of their oil if it is. But I plan on changing the oil at 500 miles or so just as a precaution. I have used Mobil 1 full synthetic in everything I own and have had 0 issues so leaning towards it. Thanks for all the reply's everyone's got their opinions always a bad apple in the bunch. I will try and post some pics but leaving the keystone market sorry no complaints on the Cougar just moving up.

A good conventional oil offers as much protection as a synthetic oil unless you are trying to extend your drain interval. I was going to switch my truck to Mobil 1, but their oil rep told me not to do so if I was going to continue changing my oil at 5,000 miles. He said at that point, he would be happy to take my money if I insisted. At the end of the day, it comes more down to what makes you comfortable about the protection being offered to your engine. Delvac, Delo, Rotella or a name brand synthetic, there probably is no real wrong answer.

The Duramax engine seems to be pretty easy on oil so as long as you use a name brand in grade oil you will be fine. You can look at some Duramax uoa's here http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...oard=25&page=1 Of course you need to do a uoa on your own engine to make sure it is doing OK but trends are in your favor

As long as the oil meets the API/Grade specified by GMC, it doesn't really matter what brand you use - name brand or not.

I use the standard oil. Chevy dealer told me to save my money as already said. Going to synthetic will give you about 1k more miles before your next change.

I change mine every 4k miles towing or not. Stick with the spec. Oil and you shod be fine. After all, that engine was designed to use it.

Ask about using a gas additive and see what responses you get. The new Duramax does not need any fuel additives either!

And congrats on the new truck. Great choice.

JRTJH , turbopilot51 and davidjsimons all gave very good advise. Diesel oil is designed to hold soot in suspension so without extra filtration the suggested extended change periods to justify the cost of synthetic oils is not recommended. (JM2˘) Take advantage of dealers "Free" maintenance and after use Shell RotellaT and a quality filter at factory intervals. The only time I would recommend synthetic is if you will be operating in extremely cold weather. Again JM2˘, Hank

I agree 100% with the above. Synththetic will not hold any more soot and without extra filtration is throwing money away because drain intervals should not be extended . Cold weather operation is the only justifiable reason in my books as it DOES make a difference in cranking friction, and faster oil distribution when in truly cold weather.

I get mine changed at 5-6K miles. The service center I use, uses a Kendall synthetic blend. He's changed my oil for 4 years running. Around $90 a pop with filter and lube. Plus he tops off fluids?? He has a working farm, races dragsters, and runs the repair and tire center. And he camps too. So he's had my business and service for these past few years. He's done a lot work on my truck. So I just go with him and his choice of oil.. ???
