Portable Generators
Hello,
How do you keep your portable generator secured when using it to recharge batteries and other uses, i.e. during the evening when sleeping at an overnight stop where there is no electricity (for the AC)?

By secure, I am guessing you mean antitheft? If so, we've got a 3' bicycle cable that I loop through the handle on the generator and then around something substantial like a tree or one of the landing gear. Then padlock it up for the night.
When we are on the road, I usually hide it under a plastic tote in the bed of the truck so that it stays dry and invisible.

I installed a ToyLok on the frame of the rig and route it's cable thru the handles and back them a heafty Master Lock. But I have never left them out over night, always put them back in the TV in bed Tool Box

Put a cable or chain with a good padlock on it secured to the trailer or truck.....don't invite some low life to steal it!

We use a MasterLock Python Cable Lock. (Beefy bicycle cable lock) Either secure it to the bed of the truck through one of the tie downs, or to the bumper of the trailer. Either place, we run the cable through the framework of the generator. It's secured that way when in use and during the time we're in the campsite. If we leave, or at night when not being used, back in the bed of the truck, locked to the tie down, with the trifold bed cover closed... Out of sight/out of mind !!!

I have a massive cable and lock (motorcycle type setup) I’ve used for computer equipment that I’m thinking of reallocating to my generator. Are generator thieves mere opportunists, or do they go around with bolt cutters and/or saws? And if someone walks off with your locked (or unlocked) generator, what insurance would cover that?

Secure
Agree with all.... yes, can't see in pics, but we use plastic covered cables and locks. Jeez, must have like 6 of those cables around and many locks... heck, I even cable the bbq to the front post of the trailer, genset is cabled to the back bumper around one of the pole handles. Only theft problem we have had in years was some teens into my beer at Myrtle Beach! Now we use an auto light that's placed under the steps into the trailer, anyone walks near the trailer and the light goes on!

I bought 2- 4ft sections of the heaviest chain Home Depot had and 2 of the biggest locks. If some wants to cut them they will have to have an aweful big bolt cutter or a torch.
The gen is locked to the bumper.

Strong cable, strong lock, and one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Honda-Generato.../dp/B003YM950C
which prevents a thief from cutting thru the plastic handle.

I purchased one of these alarm locks. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...01_i00_details
Unfortunatly it is not very secure by itself, as the locking system is only plactic (very disapointing). but if someone cuts the cable or breaks the housing, the alarm will sound and it is loud. I still use a heavy duty cable and lock with it.

Heaviest chain, monster lock and the generator theft deterrent bracket; all attached to the bumper or frame. At night we put it in the bath tub...no smells and piece of mind. Working on modifying some angle iron which would be lighter than the chain and could leave it out at night if needed A hacksaw or torch would then be needed to take her. But definitely gotta have the deterrent bracket cuz the handle can surely be cut.

Everything ya'll recommend is great untill you are found by someone that will 'want' whatever you have bad enough to take it.
I generally use a small mild chain to keep most "stuff" secure. That way if a not so honest person really wants it they cause the least amount of damage getting it...
It's just a matter of keeping 'Honest folks' honest... the not so honest will take ya to the cleaners anytime they want to. Why make the repairs more expensive ???
EDIT; My concerns are more about how much damage do I want to fix ($'s), in addition to replaceing the 'whatever that was stolen'.
Only my thoughts, your will most likely be different...

Securing
Yup, agree, if someone want's it bad enough... well they will get it. I'd venture to guess that 99 percent of the time, if a low-life is going to attempt to pull a generator from your site and there is something that stops them from walking away... like cable or any chain, then they will move on. I even use the plastic cables to secure our fuel cans, fuel is like getting more and more valuable... Anyway, lot's of perspective and all great input on this thread.

New Guy here and wanted to say this is an awesome site. I've spent 4 hours reading.
I've got a Cougar SRX 300 and use mine to carry my motorcycles. I race street and dirt. I use a Yamaha EF6300iSDE which I use for welding, so I can't afford to lose it.
I purchased a Motorcycle lock made by XENA that has a motion sensor in it, and will blast the most annoying sound if moved. I use the Kryptonite cable locked to my hitch, and it all sits in the bed of my truck. I've never had it go off, thankfully.
