Time for new tires

Its time for new tires on my 2019 Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel, I tow a 2019 Outback 301UBH, TT. We usually average about 1/3 of our yearly milage towing.
The OEM tires on our Ram needed replacing at 36103, they were replaced with Michelin Agilis. They now have 34000 miles on them and might last a few more thousand miles. I am very religious both inflation, rotation every 5000 miles. The Michelins not worn down to the ware bar yet but close maybe another 5000.
I had hoped the Michelins would have laster longer.

So what is everybody running and what kind of milage is everyone getting.

Thanks, Jeff
Pensacola, Fl

I have been very happy mounting Cooper tires (manufactured in Arkansas); mine are 18" and LRE... don't recall specific model of tire.

I'm running Cooper HTP.
Might try a more aggressive tread Hercules next.
Moderator John was running Sailuns, was happy.

I run Michelin Defenders as well. Never had a problem with mileage but I remove them at or before 50k. Last set had right at 50k and the guy at the tire store was quizzing me why I was taking them off. They still had a lot of tread and he measured it but can't remember...maybe 7/32? They looked very good. The set I put on this truck has right at 20k on them and look like I just put them on (slight exaggeration, the little rubber "feelers" are gone).

Like danny, I am a big Michelin Defender fan. We never fail to get 65k on a set.
That said, we have 73k on the Continentals on the 450 and they are still going strong, 7/32 at last oil change according to Ford.
Worth the extra money? I just can’t bring myself to pay $500 plus for a pickup tire.

I'm no tire expert, but I'd make a SWAG that you bought the wrong Michelin tires for what you're using them for.... The Agiis is a "cross climate snow tire for light truck use" it is not a "recreational towing tire".... The LTX and Defender lines are significantly longer "tread life tires"...

In fact, the Michelin site, in the legal notes for the Agilis tire line give an "expected tread life" for a F250 with a 9800 pound vehicle weight of only 24,500 miles.

My last set of Michelin LTX tires lasted 55000 miles and could have gone probably another 10K longer, but winters in northern Michigan aren't "user friendly" with minimal tread. I replaced them with Sailun TerraMax AT4S. They wore great for about 20K miles, then, this past summer while towing to North Carolina, the tread on one tire separated. Rather than risk any problems, I bought 4 new Michelin LTX/AT tires (same as the OEM tires). While I have no real problem with the Saliun tires I had, they didn't have the "reliability I expected". Maybe that tread separation is a "fluke" but then maybe it wasn't. I'm back to Michelin LTX/AT's and I doubt I'll ever buy another light truck tire other than Michelin, and then, only LTX/AT's or Defenders...

I'd guess that the Agilis Cross-Climate tires aren't the "high mileage" tires you expected. The Michelin website, more or less confirms a low/limited tread life. Here's what they say about your tires:

I would just make a follow up note on John's comments;

The OP is from Pensacola FL and don't know if my experience has any bearing. I was in the Tallahassee FL DT store asking about getting Defenders. The fella there told me that Michelin was discontinuing them and replacing them with the Agilis. I asked if they might have some Defenders at some other store as I was partial to them and he said they might but didn't know. I didn't like that story but told him thanks. I went back and researched including communicating with Michelin...they weren't discontinuing those tires. I went back and talked to the same guy....same story. So I asked him to look at the inventories. He told me there were some Defenders in Gainesville as I recall but they had none....quickly adding that they had several Agilis in my size. Hmmm, an obvious effort to sell what was on hand to me and didn't fit my purposes.

That came to mind when I saw OP was from Pensacola and maybe something like that happened on this as well. In my research the Agilis was not going to be the kind of tire I wanted for towing either. And, as another side note; I should have had them bring those Defenders from Gainesville. Ruined one of the OE Firestone Transforce tires on the way home outside Weatherford TX and THEN I got a new set of Defenders from DT (on hand) after much duress.

I replace all of my little truck tires with Michelin Defenders LTX 10 ply. I have run them for years, excellent mileage and a VERY stable tire to tow with. I will not run a different tire.

It does look like I was sold the wrong tire for my truck by DT, as I use them because they are in most of the laces we travel.
I will be looking for a set of the Defender LTXs.

Thanks for the input.
Jeff

I've been running the Nitto Ridge Grapplers for the past 6+ years on my 2011 Ram. I too get them rotated and balanced every 4-5k miles at DT, why not.. it's free!
1st set lasted 4.5 years and 64k miles. They still had plenty of tread left when one was damaged and needed to be replaced, so I replaced them all. 2nd set has been on for almost 2 years and have 27k miles on them.I expect them to last at least 50k miles.
They are quiet for an AT tire but they're not cheap.

Similar vehicle and trailer length/weight as the OP here, but the weather and winter are a lot different up here.

I changed the OEM's around 25k with Michelin Defenders. Got about 44k out those and recently had Goodyear wrangler all-terrain adventure with kevlar installed this past winter as the defenders were not available at the time. Only 8 months in to this set, so not much I can say about them yet. I do have the tires rotated every oil change (6-8k miles).

tires

What ever you get be sure their load capacity is equal og greater than the spec for the OE tires as found on the RV Certification Label.

Same here. I replaced the original tires with these at 30,000 miles. I have 43,000 on them now and they still have a lot of life left. I use Discount Tire to rotate them every 5-7,000 miles.

The tires being discussed are truck tires.

I have a 3500 Dully and have had the best luck with Cooper HTP tires. They have a 60,000 mile warranty and they cost less than the others. I have gotten over 50,000 mile before changing them out. I have discount tire balance and rotate them every 5,000 miles.

OEM tires on my F350 dually were Michelin LTX AT2's. Still in good shape after 4-1/2 yrs and almost 40K miles when I sold the truck. Ran 70 psi on fronts and 65 psi rears and they wore very well. Towed a close to 17K pound 5th wheel. Rode great for daily use also.

Put a set of Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires on in March of ‘22 on my F350 and love them. Excellent traction regardless of wet/dry/snow covered, exceptional braking and very little road noise. They are an AT tire, not purely a towing tire, as I have winter conditions here and use my truck to plow my drive, so I wanted something with a more aggressive tread than a pure highway/towing tire.

Good choice...bought a set for my oldest Grandson's 2009 Pathfinder years ago. He drove it to high school and they held up great. Still were on when he traded it on a new Chevy Silverado.

Well I pulled the trigger on a set of the Cooper Discover HT3s from DT.
I didn't have a tread depth gauge but I did check the depth with some calibers.
It looks like I have 12.3-12.4mm of tread depth.

Thanks for all the input.
