surge protector issue

I have a 50 Amp Progressive Industries Portable surge protector that is 3 years old and on our recent trip it had been plugged in for 5 months and worked fine I used it again on 2 stop overs on the way home all was good on the 3rd night I plugged it in turned on the breaker to check the status all was good I turned off the breaker plugged in the trailer turned on the breaker again there was a loud pop from the surge protector and 1 line was no longer live. After a check of the site power I was convinced to try plugging in the trailer which turned out to be fine. any ideas as to what caused the surge protector to blow and I mean blow I removed the cover and the circuit board for 1 line is totally fried.

That's really weird and I'd like to hear others thoughts on this too as it's happened to me twice in 2011Both times were in the States, once plugged in a State park and the othertime at a private park.
My electrician that lives across the street explained that sometimes there can be too much of a surge along the lines that'll actually overload the surge protector and it'll fry it.

I did call Progressive and not much help, I have to mail it in pre paid from Canada, pre pay a $42.00 service fee and pay the postage back to Canada just to find out it may not be warranty. I asked if they will sell me a replacement circuit board the answer was a firm no. I know its time to buy a new unit I just have to decide on what brand

I thought Progressive had a lifetime warranty? I was about to purchase one for that reason.

I have had mine repaired/replaced twice - each time for only the cost of shipping back to them. Maybe the warranty is different in Canada?

Talked to Progressive Industries again today and spoke to the Technical Support guy who made everything so simple all I do is ship the unit to them they do the repair and return it to me in Canada. The only thin they ask for is I must have proof of been the original owner. Better news than my last contact

Do you folks near the border ever think of getting a mailbox or General Delivery in Oroville and driving over the border for items like this, plus other shopping items? Declaring, but at least avoiding the exorbitant shipping and brokerage fees involved.

yes some do that but it doesn't work for us as we are Snowbirds and each crossing counts as 1 day less for us in the winter, there is quite the formula that Boarder services uses for both US taxes and also for British Columbia Medicare.

Checking voltage won't protect you from line surges. I would rather have to replace a surge protector than lots of appliances or worse yet a main panel in the RV. Just something to consider...

Did they give you any ideas as to why it fried?

The surge protector is still Progressive industries I doubt if they will know what caused it to fail other than a power surge, If they tell me I will post the info

I don't want this to sound harsh, but I think the surge protector did its job, just not quite in the right way. That's why we install them. I suggest it be considered the cost of RV-ing. Probably far less than what might have happened had it not "worked". It's made to be the weak link in the circuit, just not perhaps that weak. Please post again after everything gets resolve.

I spoke to Progressive today and they have repaired the surge protector at no charge and are shipping it back to Canada, as for a cause of the failure all they could say was that it was a power surge. so I guess it did its job and they did honor their advertised warranty
