youtube videos

Youtube is my go to place to see how to do something. I have had lawn tractors for many years and most with Briggs and Stratton engines. I have adjusted the valves several times over the years on several of these tractors but only do it once in a long while so I can't remember EXACTLY how to adjust the valves... there are only 2, an intake and exhaust.

First video I looked at was specifically for an Ariens 17.5hp lawn tractor like mine. Guy did OK in the video except he line the coil magnets up with the coil and adjust the valves there. Put EVERYTHING back together after following this method and BOY DID IT NOT WORK. Tractor wouldn't turn over all the way.

Watched anther video and closed the exh valve and adjusted the int valve and turned over the engine where the int valve closed and exh opened and bingo! This good as new.

I guess what I am saying is that no matter how authoritative a video may seem, it might just be bogus just like all other advice. Going to go ride around on my lawn tractor now!

We have a troy built tractor that i use for cutting a rougher section of the property and the valves do need adjustment every year or so…they get to a point where the engine wont turn over easily…makes you think it’s a dead battery.

I believe there is a compression release at one point of the valve train operation to make it easier to start…if you don’t get the valves just right it will not release in synch and turn over Slowly…get it right and it spins freely and fires right up.

i always forget and have to watch a video myself …yeah i have been known to watch a youtube video or two

Brian I know "youtube" videos will be new to you. If you need some assistance on how to view/watch them or turn them on I'm sure someone here can help. I don't do much of that either....

Having worked on cars for going on 47 years now, I will admit to watching a video or 2 or 3 when I question if I want to work on a car and figure out how much to charge.

The timing advance on old models from the 70s to early 80s had centrifical advance mechanisms that were similar. Two arms slung out as speed increased to increase timing advance. Fixing this thing on a B&S engine would require taking apart the top end as the pushrods are what contact the cam lobe.

I have used YouTube videos for, probably, hundreds of different projects...wood working, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, roofing, and lots and lots and lots of RV related repairs, fixes, and know-hows.

But, I never settle for just the first one I stumble into. I spend the time to watch, listen, and take notes from several. As you indicated, one video may present the problem and a potential fix, but leave something vital out or somehow in the video, get it turned around backwards. Watching several reveals what's really going on.

The last set of videos I REALLY watched, studied, and analyzed for days on end was hot use epoxy glaze on counter tops. Every one I watched presented the same basic information, but each out brought out a slightly different point of emphasis that they felt was most crucial or the biggest mistake they made and tips to avoid. Putting it all together, when I finally did mine, I had no issues. Time consuming yes ... but no issues.

YouTube is my friend.

One thing you REALLY have to remember about YouTube videos is the fact that folks post these videos based on their own experience and they are not "professionals". They are just ordinary folks putting something "out there" as an attempt to help someone else. There some many, many put out there also by different companies selling their products. These are more professional made videos and often include steps on how to use their products or do a simple troubleshoot of their product.

Case in point, my wife and I watched several videos on the Kitchen Aid stand mixer. Before we purchased our (just 2 weeks ago), we watched and learned, and debated if this was something we really wanted to spend the money in.

After we got it, we also purchased the bread making bowl and beater, and just yesterday received the Ice Cream maker accessory. All thanks to YouTube videos that helps us make these decision. By the way, that Ice Cream bowl needs to be frozen in a freezer for 24 hours before use. So ... about 4 pm this after noon ... we're attempting our first ice cream batch ... and yes ..... following a YouTube video's instructions.

So, you know... YouTube is a great resource. But yes, one does have take them with a grain of salt and remember where they originate from. But, if you put enough grains of salt together, you've got enough to salt your popcorn.

I use them extensively for research myself. The old Encyclopedia Britannica just doesn't cut it anymore.....do they even make them anymore? Used to love those things; parent had a set of Compton's Encyclopedias that had yearly update volumes. It all took a while to dig through and I usually got sidetracked on some other something as I read through them. A different world now....

That same "sidetracking" happens with me on UTube... I type in "axle installation" and watch 1 or 2 videos, then on the sidebar is my "previous interests" and invariably, my 3rd through 15th video are either fishing, hunting or WW2 fighter aircraft performance..... Just like Compton's, Collier's and Britannica, way too easy to get sidetracked until DW asks, "I thought you were going to work on the trailer this afternoon." .....

^^^This is how we seem to operate anymore. Can't even remember pill times for us or pup unless one of us says, "isn't it time for", "did you do xxx". Did that for our entire lives but now it seems different??

Ah... Encyclopedias! How times have moved on. I've forgotten about them and how easy it was to get "side tracked!" I haven't seen a set of encyclopedias in ... well ... I can't remember now.

OK, so we kind of failed with the ice cream and then we were kind of successful. It turned out we didn't let the mixed ingredients chill in the refrigerator long enough and the ice cream blows used on the mixer was not cold enough. Our freezer needed to set colder. The "mix" did not get hard.

So, we ended up putting the "mix" and the bowl in the refrigerator freezer, which was actually set colder than our big freezer. We left the bowl and mix in there for about 2 hours, took it out, spun it on the mixer and "wholla!" Ice Cream! OH MY was it good! We'll never get store bought ice cream again now! And oh, I turned the big freezer down ... all the way and stuck a thermometer in it. I check the temperature this morning and it was 15 degrees below zero! I think that's pretty cold now! We're going to make a second batch a little later today. You guess it, we ate it all for desert at Supper last night!
