Ecoboost and Cougar x lite 28SGS...too much?

I want to get a x lite 28SGS pin weight #1410, My 2016 ecoboost will pull 10,600 with 1750 payload. (3.5, twin turbo, 3:55 rear, max tow, 156" wheel base) payload from door frame, towing from ford website for this truck. With all the folks and stuff I will be close or maybe over my 1750 by a couple hundred pounds. Anyone pulling this 5er with this truck, and what issues have you had. We are in Michigan, planning to pull it south for winter 1200 miles, then here locally in summer. I know if we get a TT instead it too will be close to max. I've seen some say no problem, others that say they white knuckle it all the way. Maybe I'll just have to go for it and trade up on the TV if needed.

Any good advice out there?

Re: Ecoboost and Cougar x lite 28SGS...too much?

My best guess is the 'published' pin weight is much less than reality. Additionally, 5er storage is up in front of the axels. I'd give great odds, when ready to go the pin will be over 1750#. Can it be done?, of course and many are doing it. If you have P rated tires they have to go. Tires will need to be rated carry the weight. You may get close to your real axel weight rating as well. If you are going to be over payload the 5er may be less of a white knuckle tow than a TT.
Since you are thinking of trading the TV considering numbers then is also a great idea. I had a 2016 F250 that had a payload of 2427 because it was loaded including 4x4 and especially the 6.7 diesel. The motor alone adds about 500#. Often you can find an F350 for less than a F250 both new and used. Going F350 and you will be ready for your next 5er. Good luck with which ever decision you make.

Re: Ecoboost and Cougar x lite 28SGS...too much?

I was pulling my Xlite 21RBS with a 2012 f150 3.5 ecoboost. After just 1 trip I traded up to a 2016 F 250 with 6.7L diesel. For me, that little 6 banger was working too hard and even overheated on me here in the mountains of SW Virginia. Plus I had the intake condensation problems that caused severe loss of power just when power was needed, i.e. passing or towing uphill. Oh, and got 7.5 mpg towing my small trailer. New truck is far superior will last much longer and better MPG.

Re: Ecoboost and Cougar x lite 28SGS...too much?

We towed our Cougar just once with our F150 eco boost. Traded it in for a new F350 6.7 diesel. Wow what a difference. Loved our eco boost, but really love our super duty. We choose the F350 for cargo capacity. Be sure to check the yellow sticker on the door. Every truck is different and you cannot go by general statements on the website.

Regardless of published specs, I personally wouldn't tow a trailer over 7,000# any distance beyond locally with a 1/2 ton.

Re: Ecoboost and Cougar x lite 28SGS...too much?

You're trying to pull a 10,000 lb trailer with a 3.5L (213 c.i. !!! V6). No matter how you cut it, and some like the eco boost, 213 cubic inches was NEVER cut out to pull 10k. It has some good numbers for hp and torque but they come by VERY expensive add ons that can, and will, fry under heavy use. When it comes to replacement, the cost for the turbos will cost more than it would cost to just get a truck meant to actually tow.

In addition to the TV problem you will be over payload by a considerable margin. Your pin weight when loaded will exceed your payload. Tires won't handle it and your axles may not be up to snuff.

Do people do it? Everyday. Do smart people concerned about their family and others do it? No.

Do yourself a favor and look at a smaller trailer... much smaller. A 213 c.i. V6 pulling over 10k will be screaming....and imploding sooner or later.

Re: Ecoboost and Cougar x lite 28SGS...too much?

Our Cougar XLite 27RKS has a "published" pin weight of 1230. In actuality, when loaded for a trip, it's much closer to 1800 pounds. Then add 150 pounds for a fifth wheel hitch, two adults and a small cooler/toolbox/firewood (or other cargo) to the mix and you're looking at needing 2000 pounds plus to be "comfortable". There aren't very many half ton trucks that will give you the payload you need. We tow with an F250 diesel and we're "right at the limit". I wouldn't think you'll be satisfied with the performance and I know you won't be "under the numbers" with an F150.

Re: Ecoboost and Cougar x lite 28SGS...too much?

I owned a 28SGS and 2013 Chevy 2500 HD Diesel with payload of 2475 and at the time I was just a weekend camper and very lightly packed I was about 100 lbs under my GVWR of 10,000 lbs.

Re: Ecoboost and Cougar x lite 28SGS...too much?

We have two Ecoboost. The 2011 with 2059 lb payload and 3.73 rear pulls the 29' Passport with 860 hitch weight (6500 trailer weight) without issue. The 2014 with the 1152 payload and 3.55 rear can pull the TT, though works harder.

I'll bet your TV will be way over the GVWR with the TT. I believe the 1750 payload rating includes a 150 lb driver and empty fuel tanks. Also, subtract any passengers or cargo and the hitch.

Payload is always the limiting factor whether it's a 1/2 ton or even a 1 ton dually. The ecoboost is a great engine, though still only in a 1/2 ton truck. Recommend a 3/4 ton truck minimum.

I know I'm pretty late on replying, but I just saw this. I had a 2012 ecoboost with a payload capacity of 1700 that I towed a TT with for a couple of years. At that time, there was no intention of buying a 5th wheel, ever. BUT at the Richmond RV show in 2015 I bought the 28sgs, and I discussed the ability of the F150 to tow this 5th wheel and of course the dealer said its "OK" and I so I bought it. I equipped the F150 with helper springs and truck rated tires instead of the passenger tires. I knew I would be pushing the payload limit. I balanced the load by filling the fresh water tank which is behind the axle and by putting lots gear in the back of the trailer. The result was that I was 400+ pounds over the payload limit. I towed for a year this way, and believe me, the ecoboost had no problem pulling the trailer even up the mountains in western maryland. At one point I set the cruise at 60 and just pulled up the mountains. But all along I was worried about being over the payload weight. I was thinking, if this caused me to be in accident and I go to court, there is no way I could plead ignorance about being over loaded. So, after 1 year, I sold it and bought a 2012 F350 gasser. I didn't want to spend the extra bucks on the diesel. Obviously there is no issue with payload or any another weight issue and I am well within legal limits. I feel much safer towing the SGS28 with this truck than I did with the F150. But as a side note, that ecoboost is a pulling machine and it does as well as the 6.2 gasser, and maybe a little better.
