Rear rack for cargo

I need to add a rear cargo carrier for my Champion 3800 generator.
So my Chaparral had a Lippert RV and Camper Bike Racks - LC243621. It had a 250 pound capacity. It's approx $900 with all the mounting brackets.
I see HF has 2" Cargo Carriers $70-100 for 500# capacity. I know I have to get a 2" receiver mounted to the frame SO, a hitch Approximately 200-275 plus installation WAG $ 350 100+275+350 $725 Your comments!
I know the 2" and rack will reduce clearance off road !

Unless you mount it pretty high it'll hit every speed bump and RR track you drive across, not to mention the drainage elevations getting into and out of fuel stations...

I'd get the HF rack with an offset adapter, also at HF, to raise it about 4".

My experience with the factory slide out shelf on the back of the 2014 Cougar 337FLS is go as strong as you can, the weight at the end of the trailer and the bounce works like a hammer and it will bend. Get it as high as you can or it will scrape.

I made the arms in the slide three times thicker than the factory and everything is bolted, no pins to help to not bounce. I don't still trust it with the generator so it's gas cans, firewood and the burn barrel. The generator lives in the bed of the truck.

The problem with single shaft mounted carriers is the fact there is almost always slop in the receiver hitch which allows the carrier to rock back and forth (up and down) like a teeter totter. I know, I had one.

If you go forward with your plan, then consider a double shaft carrier and get 2 receiver hitches mounted on the camper. With 2 shafts you will not experience the severe rocking that occurs.

That thing looks to clamp over the square box bumper which will definitely not hold the rack w/generator.

Stay far, far away from that idea. It wouldn't matter if they said that carrier was rated for 10k lbs. that bumper won't hold a generator.....or a bicycle. Pursuing that direction will end up with the generator in someone's front grill.

The cargo carrier or bike carrier or whatever carrier, is the easy part and only as good as what it is attached to. My SIL found out the hard way about mounting a bike rack and bikes to the rear bumper. No bueno for $h!t. I just looked up welding fabricators in Montrose. There's several. Call around and get a receiver hitch done right so it will last and you won't have to worry about what you attach to it.

Thanks guys. That's why I love these forums. I found a Steel 2" fold down/fold up carrier (500lbs capacity e98874) that I can use with my front receiver for less $$

Ya, I like that idea, a lot depends on where you drive.. miles of gravel/dirt roads, or strictly Yellowstone asphalt?

Ya, right. i'd stick the generator in the truck myself.... two reason, better for the weight, second is I have been getting ripped off a lot lately, even a RV trailer disappeared from in front of my home, lock cut, it's gone.

I love the idea of living in the back, but being a 5th wheel complicates that. For hunting, the roads are paved, gravel and dirt. It's a Champion 3800, so it's a little tall. Usually I'll have 15-20 gallons of gas and 30 gallons of Diesel. They'll stay under the neck. I can cover it on the front.

Yes it would. I have a crew cab 1 ton, with a camper shell. There will never be anough space though

And I have had it up to the ears with being ripped off. I built the sweetest trailer, adjustable axel for tongue weigth, I was hauling out broken limbs after a ice storm. Load 7, no trailer in the morning, they took the limbs and all, I told the wife they just went to dump the load. Oregon,, rifles were stolen in Phoenix..
