'06 outback converter questions.

We recently purchased the TT in my sig, and I'm guessing due to my rookie status as a TT owner, I boiled the batteries leaving it plugged into the house for a month. Expensive lesson, but I got an upgrade out it but tossing the 2 12v's and getting 2 6v GC's.. About 3 times the capacity we had before.

Question is, is there a "smarter" converter that can be installed? The PC is the WF-8955AN unit, and at some point in the past it was replaced by the PO. They said it didn't work even after the replacement, but I have found no problems with it, other than user error on my part. I think they mistook the fact that it's a converter, not an inverter..

I'd like to leave it plugged in while at home without killing batteries. I plan on setting up a 100w solar panel and controller, and adding a cutoff inside the camper. Should I just forgo the converter and let the solar controller do it's thing on the batteries while the cutoff is turned off and the trailer plugged into shore power???

The WF-8955AN is a 3 stage converter and should be capable of being left plugged in without damaging the batteries... unless there is something wrong with it.

You did not state when the previous owners replaced it, but they do have a 2 year warranty on them.

I had the same converter in my camper and it died a few weeks outside of the warranty period and WFCO replaced it anyway. I sold the replacement to a member on this board.

I had decided to buy a different converter and bought a progressive Dynamics motherboard unit (PD4655 MBA) that fit into the WFCO power center and have had zero issues with it being plugged in all day, every day. You do need to check the levels in the batteries regularly and fill with distilled water when required.

I bought a really neat system for filling the batteries up, from a gallon jug.

Thank you for the info. I do not know when they had it replaced, I did not buy it directly from them. My parents bought it 2 years ago November, (thinking they would live in it while looking for a house after moving up here) and literally towed it 60 miles to their old house where it sat for the winter, then towed 140 miles to my house, where we ended up buying it from them.

There is paperwork I'll have to dig out related to the replacement unit, but I was under the assumption of what you said, it should be able to be plugged in without overcharging the batteries..

I have that filling system in my cart already, it seems to be perfect for the maintenance side of this.

In reading about the PD4655, that also seems to be what I'm looking for, thank you again. It will be on it's way soon.
