Portable Icemakers

Any input on portable icemakers like the Dometic HZB-12A/HZB-12SA, the DW is wanting one but I need convincing that it is better than just picking up a bag of ice every couple days at the corner store.

We have one and it works fine. MY wife likes the convenience of having it for fresh ice. We have used it to help bag ice. but in the summer time it works very hard to keep up and you have to add water pretty regular. For around $100 it was a good buy. I would not pay more than that for it. YOu can find them on sale usually at the end of the summer season. might find a few around now. I would say they are made the same(different names) and priced all over the place.

We have one too. It pays for itself rather quickly once you figure out how much a bag of ice is, and how often you have to go get one. I even recycle the water from the ice chest.

Thanks for the reminder. I like the 12SA for just the two of us, and CW is having an internet sale.

Looks to be the same as the Dometic. Store pickup.

Wow, those things aren't cheap. It must be nice, though, having the room to store and use goodies like that. If we had the space, I'd probably be an ice-maker-haver.

When I am on the road, it's under the dinette. At the CG it's plugged in outside by the entry door so I don't have to listen to it. Since you can vary the size of the cubes, it will make a bunch of medium size fairly quickly. Once the ice chest is full, I turn it to large cubes and it keeps up.

We also have the Dometic brand and find it very convenient to have. Wished we would have went with the 12SA model instead of the 15xx model which is very large. I think too large for the added capacity of 6 pounds/day. Neighbors love it though "Camp Site Ice Source". Recommend the 12SA model. Comes in handy when no stores in the area.

I for one will say that there's nothing worse than having old ice from a store in my drink!

I've manage to convince the DW that one ice cube in 3 fingers of Bulleit is a mixed drink..

Yup, that's a good mixed drink, any more cubes and it's a watered down drink.

I believe all of those ice makers are made by one company, just can't recall who.

We are getting one for our camper before next summer. We typically go through 30# of ice on a weekend, at that rate it won't take long at $3+ a bag to pay for itself.

Prefer my whiskey straight, but want ice water backup.

I have had my portable ice maker for 5 years and it has been lugged around in at least three different trailers and love it. I plug it in as soon as we start to set up the trailer and have Ice for the rum coke by the time I sit down under the awning. I even left it in front of the furnace outlet and melted the back of it. Does not look pretty but still puts out the ice.

I found one at Home Depot for $99 also. It makes 26lbs of ice in a day.

We had one...about 4 yrs ago,, had it for our TT and then Ol Girl would use it in the house also..for some reason it started leaking.. She took it back to Costco, got her money back and never replaced it with another.. I guess it was ok. Never thought it kept up that good...

How many times a day does one have to make a point to go over and put in more water?
