How much patience?

We are looking to add a second awning over the outdoor kitchen and bathroom door on our Hideout (pic shows what I am looking to do). Should be a pretty simple install for an RV dealer, but not something I want to deal with myself. I took my TT to a local, non Keystone dealer where I did NOT buy my unit (20 miles from house). Closest Keystone dealer is 100 miles and I also did not buy my unit from them.

They measured, and were going to give me a prices on both a manual and power awning. The service/parts rep was having trouble getting a match for the right awning from Dometic, so he said he'd call or email me the quote. So far:
Friday, 4/11-stopped at dealer with TT
Tuesday, 4/22-had not heard anything, so I called at 9am and left message.
Wednesday, 4/23. called at 10:30am -got the guy I spoke to and he said he was still trying to get a labor quote from his service guy. He'd email me the quote.
Today is the 28th-haven't heard from them. I know it's spring, they are busy, and I am not a customer. Am I unrealistic to expect to get a quote on something like this in more like a few days?

What would you do?

IF you can I would stop by and see what the status is, maybe email them as to not be to pushy, if no response call them again. Have to be easy on your approach because they can easily tell you they are not going to do it or get you TT in and than drag their feet getting the job done. Easy nudging will get you farther than flat out pushing them down in the mud.

Rather than trying to get an RV dealer to install your new awning, you might try to find an independent RV maintenance repairman and see if he can get the awning and install it. In many areas (and the number is growing) there are independents who will be happy to pick up the slack from "overworked" or "not interested" dealerships. Check your local newspaper "services offered" section in the classifieds or check the yellow pages/internet for RV repair.

I second the last post. My a/c was vibrating really bad one weekend. I called the local dealer Monday and it was going to be 2 weeks to get it looked at. I checked with the local campground and the recommend a guy they knew. I called him and he told me to check a few things on the phone before he came out. One of his probable causes was dead on. (Mud doppers built a nest in the end of the fan hub). No charge, but u can bet he's first on my list for a non warranty repair I can't do myself.

Check local campgrounds, and also check on the site maps you get, many rv repair people advertise there. Might be able to get some work done on the road vs. Waiting until you get home.

Another bonus is they will normally come to you.

I can understand a dealerships shop being busy and it taking a bit of time to get a unit in and out plus getting parts shipped.
Price quotes, finding parts? Not so much!
These folks have most of the contacts for parts and pricing at their fingertips.
A day or two to get around to it perhaps. Beyond that then I figure they don't need my business or money as I see it as a precursor to what is ahead with the shop.
I would rather drive 50 miles to a capable shop that values my business than deal with a shop that acts like they are doing me a favor...

I agree with WT. The service manager has a price list at his fingertips and he knows how much time it takes to install anything, almost down to the minute. I would either go elsewhere, call an independent, or do without. That shop does not want your business.

Being a business owner, I have no patience with shops that do not deliver an acceptable level of service. If I don't want a job, I say so, and I have had customers that I have told that too because dealing with them was just more hassle than I wanted to take on.

first thing YOU ARE A CUSTOMER! if they don't think you are worthy of their shop then you don't need them! i would try to find a local rv repairman. it really sounds like the dealer doesn't care. good luck with the project!.

100% agree. Certain projects and customers are just not worth it. Instead of ignoring a customer you should tell them upfront. Cannot be all things to all people all the time.

Thanks for all the replies. I would say my typical style is to just be nice and let them treat me like crap...aka...have patience and don't be pushy. If I start to annoy them, it only gets worse. I didn't think it would be like this as they have a 20 bay garage and are a huge dealer......

with that said, I am more inclined to take the other advice and go elsewhere (even though it will be further away) because I TOTALLY agree that a week should be more than sufficient time to get a quote on something this simple. I could have dragged the TT out of winter storage over to them to get it done, but thought, since I was using it in early April, that it would be plenty of time (6 weeks), to get this awning installed by end of May for the main camping season. I even asked when I was there, 'how long does an order like this take to ship to the shop'. They said 2 weeks tops.

I'll have to do some digging and see if there's a local guy in the Binghamton Area.
Thanks

There may be a liability issue that they don't want to deal with. Not excusing their lack of response, but what you want to do could have an ill effect on the structure if it wasn't setup that way from the factory. Just a thought.

I hate to say it, but I just find the RV Dealers are often the last place to take a trailer for repairs. It seems that many of their shops are there to do warranty work and that's it. I'm sure there are independent shops around who want your business. Find one of them. They are almost always better than the dealer. I have the same bias about auto shops--a good independent shop will do a better job, quicker and at a better rate!

Smaller independents are the way to go. Just do your homework up front and check them out to be sure they are legit.

So I ended up emailing two of the guys in service/parts, and got a reply the next day with the quote on adding another awning. Pretty pricey. I think I will be looking for a second quote before moving on.

10' power awning- $2300 installed with tax
10' manual awning-two different models, either $1500 or $1700 installed.

Just as a comparison, Camping World is currently selling the Dometic 9100 power awning in 10' size with the tall awning uprights for about $1000 and they are running a $39 installation special, so the power awning is about $1200 At CW installed, tax included.

You may not be near a CW store, may not want to do business with them, but the prices you were quoted are quite a bit higher than the CW prices for their power awning.

Thanks JRTJH. Camping world has two locations, both exactly 66 miles from me. One I hesistate going to because I blew them off to buy my TT out of state and save 3K. However, the other, I will be going right by in two weeks. The parts specialist was off today, I'll call tomorrow to get more details.
I'd be surprised if they'd install it for $39, even if I become a Good Sam member (for $25), but I've been surprised before.....

Awnings aren't explicitly excluded in the $39 installation brochure, so it's definitely worth checking out!
